Sunway Lagoon Theme Park of Malaysia

Think of theme parks in Southeast Asia Malaysia comes to mind! Statistics record Malaysia has more than 25 theme parks and thus is a highly sought after holiday destination for families. You can find my post on another theme park: Genting Highlands. Here is one more fun filled theme park Sunway Lagoon which is ranks in top 5 amusement parks of Malaysia.

History of Sunway Lagoon Theme Park

Can you believe the place where this park exists today was once a mining wasteland? Till 1980s there was no sign of any development around this abandoned tin mine. Sunway Lagoon Park came up in 1992 and after that there was no looking back. The property around has reached sky high price. This 88 acres park is built 150 ft below ground level of the tin mining wasteland. Today there are 90 attractions spread across six parks. I came away impressed! What a brilliant use of the wasteland!

What to expect in Sunway Lagoon Theme Park

  • Lost Lagoon
  • Water Park
  • Amusement Park
  • Sunway Lagoon Wild Life Park
  • Extreme Park
  • Scream Park
  • Nickelodeon Park

Frankly I could not experience all of these in a span of 3 to 4 hours I spent there. But I can assure you that even one whole day wouldn’t be enough to experience all these fun. While families come here for holidays there is another crowd which frequents this theme park. They are the corporate teams who come for team building activities.

They have a good collection of exotic animals like white lions and tigers. These are natives of Africa, now lodged here since 2015. As expected the enclosures of these 2 exotic breeds drew huge crowds. A thick glass pane separates them from the curious visitors. They have named the White Lions Zola and Zuri. The White Tigers are Samson and Asha.

Besides these 2 there are 150 species-specific exhibits of exotic animals, a diverse range of birds, fishes, reptiles and mammals from all around the world. Most enjoyable was the walk around the aviary. I have never seen so many varieties of exotic birds so close and flying around freely.

Extreme Park

Those looking for adrenaline pumping activities they should head to Extreme Park. You can expect the highest, the longest and the fastest thrills and excitement. I did a recce of this park and saw some of their interesting activities are:

  • Archery
  • All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV)
  • Flying Fox (Length of 206 meters)
  • Kayak
  • Mountain Biking
  • Pedal Boating
  • Paintball Target Shooting
  • Bungee Trampoline
  • Swan Ride

There a young girl may be in her teens did bungee jumping. I was in awe and full of respect for her.

Sunway Lagoon Surf Beach

It was easy to make beach environs in this park since it was already a dug up mine. Sunway Lagoon Park has the Largest Man-Made Surf Beach, stretching over 13,000sqm. The water park here has the ability to condition the waves according to the needs of the surfers. The height, time and wave patterns make Surf Beach here a surfer’s paradise for both professional and aspiring surfers.

The palm trees, huts and islands create a tropical beach oasis in the middle of the city. The Flow Rider here is Malaysia’s first surf simulator. Beginners can feel the rush of skateboarding, surfing, snowboarding, wake boarding and skim boarding. This was my favorite place. Even though I did not participate I enjoyed watching the thrills and shrills of the holidayers there.

Some accolades for Sunway Lagoon Theme Park are:

  • Asia’s Best Attraction’ by the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA) from 2007-2010,
  •  The winner of the inaugural ‘Asia ’s Best Waterpark 2011’ by IAAPA
  •  Winner of ‘Best Man-Made Tourist Attraction 2005/2006’ awarded by Tourism Malaysia
  •  4th Best Water Theme Park in Asia by TripAdvisor’s Travelers Choice 2016
  •  Bronze Award for the Entertainment Category at the Putra Brand Award 2016
  •  Best Theme Park’ for the Going Places Readers’ Choice Awards 2016.
  • Park won the Outdoor Theme Park Concert Venue category at the Malaysia Tourism Council (MTC) Gold Awards 2017
  • People’s Choice Award (Entertainment) at the Putra Brand Awards
  •  Asia’s “Employer of Choice” at the HR Asia Awards 2017

Food in Sunway Lagoon Theme Park

You will have to replenish your energy packs after all the thrills and excitement here. Worry not, as there are plenty of eateries around the place. There are Indian restaurants catering to huge number of Indian tourists visiting the park. Since I love Malaysian food I opted for Lasi Nemak here.

  • The Extreme Park is where I need to head. I can easily spend a whole day at the Sunway Lagoon Theme Park, it looks pretty cool! And to imagine that it was made on a mining wasteland, wow!

What an amazing place! The extreme park and wildlife park would be so much fun! It does seem like the kind of place you would be more than one day to experience.

I think it’s great to have so many theme parks in one area. It makes getting between them so easy. When I get back to Kuala Lumpur, I will have to check it out.

  • Looks like a super fun place to take the family too. Wonder if I can convince the nephew to join me here?

  • After growing up going to theme parks in Southern California hearing about Sunway Lagoon was exciting. You certainly have more animals than Disneyland! Nice that groups come for team building too. Great post.

  • I’m not much of a theme park lover but looking at the fun pictures that you have shared, I would not mind visiting this place if I have few extra days to spend in Malaysia. That would be fun I believe.

  • 25 theme parks, really? Had no idea. I’d have to check out that other post of yours, because they sound like places to take your family to. Even though the Sunway Lagoon Park was a mining wasteland once. 😀
Would love to see those white tigers and to try a kayak ride… I think I’ll add now few more things to do when in Malaysia, thanx. 😉

  • So, if I go back to Malaysia, but this time with my daughter, then this theme park could be a good day out for her to have some fun……. hmmmmm….you convienced me. 🙂

  • It’s been a while since I visited Sunway Lagoon last. I had great time at the Water Park. I haven’t had the chance to see the Wildlife Park tho. Because I’m a cat-person I’m definitely keen to see the white lions (Zola and Zuri) and the white tigers (Samson and Asha). It’s impressive that this theme park has received so many accolades such as Asia ’s Best Waterpark 2011 and Best Man-Made Tourist Attraction 2005/2006. I think it’s time for a revisit.

  • Now you have me wanting to visit Malaysia! Looks like a fun and exciting trip.

  • Looks like this park has everything! A water park, a zoo, fun rides, and yummy food all in one place! Thanks for sharing!

  • That looks like a really fun park. I would have to say the Scream Coaster would have to be favorite, it looks wicked spooky.

  • Okay you’ve convinced me! I HAVE to go to this theme park one day!

  • Um, YES I would love to go there!! That looks amazing. I’ve been planning on making my rounds to interesting countries over there, beginning with the Philippines but I’m thinking I might have to drop by Malaysia first! Epic bucket list add. Thank you for posting
