Durga Puja 2026: Why This Year Has an Extra Day
2026 Durga Puja is special because it comes with an extra day of festivities. For Bengalis it is nothing less than a bonus. Usually, the Durga Puja festival spans for five days – Shoshthi, Saptami, Ashtami, Navami and Dashami. This year it is for six days, that will include two Saptamis.
This is because of Ahoratra Tithi, a quirk of the Hindu lunar calendar.
What is Ahoratra Tithi? (a simple explanation)
In this phenomenon a tithi (lunar day) sometimes extends beyond one sunrise and continue into the next morning, so it touches two mornings. According to Bengali panjika, some places have two Shoshthis. Complicated, right? It is of interest for astronomy students, rest of us can focus and enjoy the extra day of Maa Durga’s annual homecoming.
For Bengalis, Durga Puja is a time of family reunions, catching up with old friends, new clothes (and new jewellery for women), bhog and pandal hopping. Music, lights, dhunuchi naach, crowds: the excitement of Pujo has peaked this year.

Durga Puja in Bangalore: What to Expect
Though there are no elaborate pandal creations in Bangalore like the ones that come up in Kolkata, West Bengal, there are several puja committees; nearly 100 in number. I have visited more than a dozen on the very first day of Pujo, Shoshthi. The pandal decorations range from unique to simple, yet the spiritual aura around the idols is the same.
The sight of Maa Durga with her four children, all beautifully decked, along with the sound of dhak and dance by dhakis is mesmerizing.
