Beautiful Green Rose from Yercaud Botanical Garden, Tamil Nadu
You have seen roses but have you seen a green colored rose before? Green Rose, scientific name – Rosa chinensis viridiflora is a chance mutation discovered before 1856. Its exact origin is unknown.
Green Rose Bush in Yercaud
I saw these green roses, a rare variety of roses in full bloom in the botanical gardens of Yercaud. Observe carefully and you will find the flower has no petals. It has only sepals, green in color, layer after layer. This gives the impression of it being a flower.
Green Rose is thought to be a descendant of Old Blush which is a two hundred year old form of Rosa Chinensis. China roses are extremely hardy, even in winters the Green Rose never loses its leaves. It remains vibrant green with a tinge of red. The bright green is a nice complement to other rose colours and is often used in floral arrangements.
Conditions for Growing Green Rose Plant
- Since there is no flower so no seed and therefore no next generation of green rose plant. This plant exists due to the kindness and love of gardeners who take cuttings and make more roses.
- Green Rose is sun loving, flowering luxuriously in sunny areas.
- It is fairly drought resistant. Plant in well drained soil and fertilize with an organic fertilizer in the spring.
- Prune out dead canes and shape the plant to the height and width in fall.

I've done some research in plant mutations before and it looks like those are actually sepals (small leaf like structures that protect the bud/flower). I'm unsure of the specifics, but I think it's a mutation in the MADS box which has resulted in sepal forming in place of petals. The petals are those faint pink structures. Would love to see this in person and study it myself…Thanks for the photo 🙂
I used to wonder as to how there could be green roses. But they were there. I had a plant and could not continue to have the same feel for long. Had there been a different shade of green, I things they would looks graceful.
How unusual these are!
I have never seen green roses in my life…until now! Never knew they even existed!
They don't even look like real roses…wow!
To me the green colors make it rare.. but it's beautiful! 🙂
That's cool. They look almost more leafy than petal-ish.

Those are very interesting. The shape of the petals reminds me of the white oak leaf. I would love to see one of these in person!
