Faces of India – 277 Vendor at Cucumber Festival Goa

Faces of India,

Faces of India is a series through which I intend to portray the various characters of my country whom I met during my travels. I bring back souvenirs, frozen moments from my travels, why not some memories of people I have met and interacted during the travels. Faces of India is a weekly series in my blog since MARCH 2011. A woman vendor selling cucumbers at cucumber festival, Goa. This is a state festival of Goa, India. People from all walks of life, not just Christians but Hindus too, congregate here to celebrate this festival. The festival is being celebrated here for past 4 centuries and there is faith in the residents around that a wish for baby is fulfilled by offering prayers here. Many childless couples and newly wed couples throng here to pray by offering cucumbers for a baby and they return to offer their thanks, again in the form of cucumbers.

There is a grand fair (mela) kind of atmosphere. Vendors sit with heaps of cucumbers for sale. It is the start of cucumber season and they make most use of this festival to rake in good money. At other times I sell other vegetables too, she said.
