Jaipur Interesting Historical Facts

Did you know that in another five years Jaipur, the capital city of Rajasthan, will be three centuries old? Yes, founded in 1727, Jaipur was established by Jai Singh II, the Raja of Amber. An increasing water scarcity and rapidly-growing population in Amber compelled the King to shift base.

Jaipur is the first planned city of India. Jaipur city was planned by the well known Vaastu scholar of his times, Vidyadhar Bhattacharya, for prosperity, peace and harmony.

The city donned a pink outfit in 1876, when the Prince of Wales visited India on a tour. Pink color is symbolic of hospitality, therefore as a mark of welcome Maharaja Ram Singh of Jaipur painted the entire city pink.

In the modern scenario today, Jaipur city is one of the three corners of the Golden Triangle in Indian Tourism that includes Delhi, Agra and Jaipur. Golden for the religious and historical sites; and triangle for the equilateral distance between the cities when plotted on map.

Budget friendly Restaurants in Jaipur

Lakshmi Misthan Bhandar Jaipur

Tired after souvenir shopping in Johari Bazaar of Jaipur?

Lakshmi Misthan Bhandar is THE place to go! An iconic restaurant, you can have the food in their dining space which is most often crowded or pack and take away your choicest food items. But sitting and having their Rajasthani Royal Thali is an experience by itself. This is one of the best restaurants in Jaipur for family.

I missed that but I did taste their specialties like papad mangodi (sun dried lentil dumplings with papad in watery soup rich with the right amount of flavorful spices), felt nice warmth go down the throat, dahi bada (fried lentil dumplings in curd) and a slice of ghewar oozing with all goodness of sweetened milk.

Puranji Kachori Wala Jaipur

Kachori Wala, or Puran ji Kachori wale to be more specific, is famous for hing kachori. Established in 1963, the fact that the shop draws crowds in huge numbers is proof of the fact that they deliver quality stuff.

Located in the by lanes, the shop has no proper dining facilities. It specializes in fast food, you have to get your stuff packed and then move on. Dahi Kachori combination is something you must try here. You get Kachoris, samosas, and other savouries in a price range of 25INR to 12 INR per piece.

Gulab Chand Diary Jaipur

GCD of Jaipur, is famous for its dairy products. Anything and everything made and extracted from milk is available in this tiny shop. I had the smoothest, fluffiest and melt in the mouth kind of white butter here. An old shop, now run by the third generation of the original owners, is flourishing well. In spite of all the crowds that become difficult to handle at times, they have no intention of giving up this teeny-weeny shop.

If it is just one item you want to taste here let it be the Kesar Pista Makkhan (butter). This delicacy is prepared by mixing crushed mishri (rock sugar), ground saffron (Kesar) strands, pista (Pistachios) and flavored with cardamom.

All items are pocket friendly, decently sized, fresh and prepared in a hygienic way. (Those allergic to dairy products may please stay away and not succumb to temptation).

Address – 280, Chaura Rasta Rd, opposite SBI bank, Tripolia Bazar, Pink City, Jaipur, Rajasthan 302003

Open Timings – 6 AM to 7 PM.

Continental Dishes (mid budget range)

In the recent past the city has witnessed an escalation of young crowds in cafes. These places are often the meet up points of youngsters. With the evolution of a new work culture that of work from home to work from cafes, the café joints are now striving to provide such individuals a better and conducive working environment. They have budget friendly food and drinks and a trendy ambiance. Many of these cafes of Jaipur have continental dishes in their menu besides traditional dishes.

OTH Bistro and Bakers

I experienced an elaborate seven course continental meal in OTH Bistro and Bakers. You can read about it here: Jaipur Café Culture Experience. OTH Bistro and Bakers has the ambiance of a European bistro, offers baked delights and a wide range of healthy bites, hot and cold beverages.

Royal Dining (luxury budget) in Jaipur

With luxury budget know where to eat in Jaipur.

I had breakfast and dinner in these hotels of Jaipur; the food is exemplary but costs a bomb. If you are ready to splurge you can try out the royal cuisine at these hotels in palaces of medieval era in Jaipur.

Jai Mahal Palace Jaipur

Marble Arch in Jai Mahal, Jaipur, offers a multi-cuisine menu. It is among the top 10 restaurants of Jaipur. The dining hall has elegant rare white Makrana marble pillars dated 1745 and archways that grace its interiors which is a blend of Rajput and Indo-Saracenic architecture. You may not get the traditional Thali (do check on this) but their Indian section does have a good range of traditional local dishes.

One interesting thing I noticed here is the calorie intake with one portion is mentioned in kcal. That cautioned me from devouring their yumm desserts.

Address – Jai Mahal Palace, Jaipur, Jacob Rd, Civil Lines, Jaipur, Rajasthan 302006

Timings – 06:00am to 11:45pm

Jai Mahal Dinner

Jai Mahal Palace Dinner – 100g chocolate walnut pudding is 289 kcal 🙁

The Leela Palace Jaipur

The Leela Palace Jaipur is ranked among the best 5 star hotels of India. I had the good fortune of being there during its launch under JW Marriott chain.

Sukh Mahal – I had breakfast and lunch in Sukh Mahal of The Leela Palace Jaipur. This space was built inspired by the architectural details of the Sukh Mahal palace of Bundi. The dining space extends to the Peacock courtyard. You have both Ala Carte and buffet to suit your appetite. Their beverage menu is also impressive.

Open timings – Open every day from 7 AM to 11 PM.

All kinds of food available in Ala Carte.

Mohan Mahal – The Mohan Mahal in The Leela Palace Jaipur is open for only dinner, and it is worth an experience. They have used 350,000 mirrors to make this Mohan Mahal, inspired by Amer Fort of Jaipur. And the interesting thing is that it took them 3 years to complete making this dining room. There are no electric lamps; instead they have used only candles, 100s of them.

The royal Rajasthani Thali is heaped with the traditional items from Rajasthani cuisine that includes Daal Bati Churma, laal maas and more.

Open timings – Open every day from 7 PM to 11 PM.

Once Upon a Time Nahargarh, Fine Dine Restaurant

The location of this restaurant makes it stand out from the rest. Once Upon a Time, Fine Dine Restaurant of Nahargarh is located on the top of hill Nahargarh Fort. The ambiance of the dining hall has a royal feel, well furnished and colourful wall murals. This is one of the best restaurants in Jaipur with a view.

Approx. cost – Veg Thali – 1250 INR, Non Veg Thali – 1650 INR. Ala Carte too available.

It is interesting that Jaipur City offers a good mix of food choices that suit different palates and pockets. Jaipur is the pink city of India and one of the three of the iconic Golden triangle route. The city is full of forts and palaces with mouth watering cuisine. The kesaepista makkhan, dahi kachori and papas mangodi sound very inviting.
And some of the restaurants are located in premier forts with spectacular views of the city.
I have very faded memories of visiting the streets of Jaipur during my early years of childhood colorful of attires and sweet shops.

  • I love the posts with food recommendations because I always have trouble choosing the right place. I also like to try local cuisine. The flavors of Rajasthan are vibrant. Jaipur is a beautiful city with fascinating architecture and culture. During my visit, I ate local delicacies on the street. But I’d love to visit the restaurants you mentioned. I would love to visit Lakshmi Misthan Bhandar because of the long tradition and affordable prices. Gulab Chand Diary also seems like a great place.

  • Pretty amazing that they painted an entire city pink just to be more welcoming! Talk about hospitality. Also cool that they’ll soon be celebrating 300 years. I bet there’ll be lots of special celebrations then.

  • Such a mouth-watering post haha. Would love to visit Jaipur just for the food tour! My first stop in Jaipur would be Puranji Kachori Wala since I Love Kachoris!

  • I like the idea of planning some spots to eat in Jaipur before heading out for shopping. We like to try different kinds of places when we travel. We can do the less formal spots without proper dining facilities like Kachori Wala. But also like to splurge on luxury spots like the Jai Mahal Palace. Although I must admit I prefer not to have calorie counts on the menus.

Dear Indrani, you post left me hungry. I loved those cheap eateries and take aways in India, like Lakshmi Misthan Bhandar. I live in Berlin and a few months ago a South Indian chain newly opened: Cheap, tasty and a lot of vegetarian options! The sweets from Gulab Chand Diary Jaipur also look so mouth-watering! I have to google for a place to buy some Indian sweets right now.

  • It’s fascinating to know that the color pink symbolizes hospitality in Jaipur! And clearly, with these excellent places to eat in Jaipur, the city excels at it. I would love to try the specialties at Lakshmi Misthan Bhandar, like the the Rajasthani Royal Thali, papad dahi bada, and mangodi, at Lakshmi Misthan Bhandar. Even better that it’s budget friendly. That might make it more likely for me to stay at The Leela Palace Jaipur and enjoy their luxuries. I would certainly love to experience candle light dining at Mohan Mahal with all of those mirrors – that’s so cool! No doubt, their traditional Rajasthani cuisine is outstanding.

That is a combination of food that I have never heard of. It would be interesting to try and taste. I really like the idea of the restaurant GCD of Jaipur. The dairy products idea seems delicious. I would like to try the Kesar Pista Makkhan. The ingredients makes tempting
