Things to Do Hasselt Belgium
On our second day of Europe tour we planned to visit Hasselt in Belgium. It was a long day starting from Frankfurt and after a good tour of the two World Heritage sites of Germany Bruhl and Aachen we crossed over to Belgium. We planned night stay in Holiday Inn Hasselt.
Although we intended to get to Antwerp we could guess we would run out of time after all that sightseeing. And we also wanted to see Leuven which is halfway between Hasselt and Antwerp. At no cost we wanted to drive after nightfall.

Stay in Holiday Inn Hasselt
Hasaluth looked like a quiet city with not much of hectic activity, the day was nearing its final moments too and that could be the reason. The Holiday Inn is very conveniently located. we stayed just for the night without unpacking much.
We could find a slot for parking our car in one of the public parking places. Below is the sight of the sky from the parking lot.
Things to do in Hasselt Belgium
The name Hasselt came from Hasaluth, which means hazel wood. A small cosy town cwhen compared to other cities of Belgium, however there are plenty of things to do in Hasselt Belgium if you intend to spend a day here. The city goes to sleep early I guess or we were too late as there was not a single soul in streets of Hasselt Belgium when we strolled late evening. I was really impressed by the colorful facades of the houses and the buildings that lined the streets. They have a nice medieval aura around them.
We strolled around a bit through the streets of Hasaluth. We passed the St. Quentin’s Cathedral that was well lit. The façade looked grand against the dark sky. Other things of interest in Hasselt Belgium are:
- The Abbey and Refugehuis of Herkenrode in Kuringen
- The Japanese gardens, the largest in Europe
- The National Bank of architect Henri Van Dievoet.
- The St. Quentin’s Cathedral
- The Virga Jesse Basilica
- National Jenever Museum
There are several themed walks in Hasselt. They allow more elaborate coverage of the city in a slow pace. Another view of a street of Hasselt. Check this itinerary of 7 Days Road Trip through Belgium for a list of things to do in Hasselt.
