Faces of India – 57 Take My Picture with My Pet Sheep
Faces of India,
Faces of India is a series through which I intend to portray the various characters of my country whom I met during my travels. I bring back souvenirs, frozen moments from my travels, why not some memories of people I have met and interacted during the travels. Faces of India is a weekly series in my blog since MARCH 2011. See more here…
This picture of the old lady with her pet lamb was taken long before I started this Faces of India series. I was at Kokkare Bellur clicking the migratory birds, The village has so many tamarind trees all of them home to the migratory Painted storks and other birds. She was watching me for a while, I too saw her observing me with lot of interest.
Suddenly she called out to me and asked hesitantly, “Can you take my picture?” I was thoroughly pleased and surprised. I said I can but I will not be able to give you any print. She waved it off as if indicating it didn’t matter. Then she signaled me to wait. I wondered – why. All this conversation was through hand signs and few words.
She went and got her sheep and putting her arm around it she posed. “Take my picture with my pet sheep”. She was a little stiff, and she insisted on seeing how the picture turned out. Seeing it she nodded her head in approval and then gave a smile. I later saw that many villagers of Kokkarebellur have sheep as pets.
I love how she wanted her sheep to be in the picture too 🙂

Great capture and a wonderful anecdote to go with it!
Once I was lost in a forest and met a woman having sheep, she gave me fresh milk and showed me the way.
