Rorrel, My Balcony Garden Squirrel Pet has Babies
Rorrel My Squirrel Pet got Aggressive with Invaders
The other day I witnessed a verbal duel, mostly one sided, between Rorrel my squirrel and a pigeon which had come to have a dip in my lily pool. (I named my squirrel character, Rorrel, a derivative of rodent and squirrel).
My Rorrel was giving out continuous series of chirps, high pitched ones that left the pigeon with a puzzled look in its face. After a while the pigeon could not bear Rorrel’s incessant chirps anymore and flew off. Soon I read up on Squirrel Facts and got to understand its aggressive behavior better.
Rorrel now advanced and looked directly into my eyes, assessing me top to bottom. I was a bit nervous, because I had read they can leap five to six feet into the air from ground level, what if she decides to jump on me.
I stood motionless, trying to focus on Rorrel’s movement. Surprisingly I found her immune to the sound of the clicks of my camera. The little gal was getting braver.
Rorrel came closer and Grr… showed me her teeth. Those incisors grow six inches per year, but thankfully stay short due to the constant wear they receive. Few more clicks and then she got bored and left the scene.
My Squirrel Pet has Babies
The good news is that my balcony garden visitor, Rorrel, my pet squirrel has babies… two of them. It was the tail I spotted first, how well they were camouflaged in the branches of the small ficus tree I have in my balcony! Squirrel babies are called kits or kittens. They were quite grown up and Mother Rorrel was training them to be on their own.
This baby sat calmly for me, but the unfortunate part was that it was surrounded by so many leaves that I found it hard to focus on the little one. Many of my shots were getting focused on the leaves. It seemed to be sunbathing with its eyes closed.
These pictures were of one of the babies who seemed to be camera shy. As soon it sensed I was aiming at her, she went back to her hiding place.
Hilary did mention in her comment when I blogged about the verbal duel between her and a pigeon in one of my previous posts. She did guess, “I wonder if there were young in the area and she(?) was making sure nobody came any closer.”. I scanned the area, but could never find the babies. They were in their infancy stages then I am sure. I missed the infancy stages of these babies, Rorrel had hidden them in the big pot, I could never guess.
Cute creatures. Your patience is admirable.
You really have loads of patience…lovely adorable pictures 🙂

Squirrels are very cute animals. These days we have less trees to get a glimpse of such animals and birds chirping on them.
Congrats to Rorrel and Now I guess its your time to think of two names,or have you named them?

You are so lucky to have these cute tenants in your balcony.
Lovely photos!
Fascinating to see young animals appear from apparently nowhere! Squirrels are very inventive! We have many of them here in our woods. I like them.
You did an excellent job on photographing the babies! They are adorable.
Hugs

Lovely photos!
I like the term "wild pets" coming and going freely. How cute and a good motherly instinct to hide the babies in the pot. I guess the scattering of a little food entices them to come and check out this instant larder.
Cute baby squirrels! Nice pictures!

Sweet family.:)
Wonderful shots. They are very cute.
That's the cutest balcony inhabitant ever.
We love squirrels, but they are always so far up in the trees, we don't see the babies. Happy Blog Hop.

Awww Mama Rorrel! So sweet. She was just defending her babies from that pigeon. So sweet. Thanks for sharing these cuties and thanks also for the mention.
What sweet photos and, to think, they were right there, hidden where you least suspected. I had just read that squirrel babies are blind when they are born and remain that way for some time afterwards so I guess mom's are very wary.
Aww!He's so small and so cute!! Lovely entry you got here! 🙂
