Rajagopuram in Srirangam Tamil Nadu – World Tallest Gopuram
Yet another famous Gopuram of Srirangam is the Rajagopuram (the royal temple tower).
Gopurams are ornate entrance towers at the entrance of south Indian Hindu temples. This Raja Gopuram is the latest addition to the centuries old Sriranganathaswamy Temple.
Construction for Rajagopuram in Srirangam Tamil Nadu commenced in May 1979 and was completed in March 1987.
Rajagopuram of Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple in Trichurapally Tamil Nadu is famous because it holds the record of being the tallest Gopuram in the world. Wiki mentions its height at 239.501m.
Rajagopuram rises from the base area of around 32500 sq ft, moving up in eleven progressively smaller tiers. You can see the list of tallest Gopurams here.
This picture was taken on 1st Jan 2010.
Rajagopuram in Srirangam Tamil Nadu is realization of the dream of the 44th pontiff of Srimad Azhagiya Singar Swamil. At least 200 workers toiled day and night for nearly eight years to construct the temple tower.
It was constructed on top of a stone base that is about 300 years old. Cracks have appeared in the structures, the officials say there is nothing alarming as yet. These tall structures are reviewed from time to time for safety.
Yet another gopuram…
This shot of gopuram (gate) was taken from the view point on the roof top of a small structure in the temple complex. The dome of the gopuram looked magnificent against the pink sky; it looked as if the sky was trying to match its color with the colors on the gopuram. The seven crows on the seven pots were adding lot of sound bytes to the otherwise still scene.
A reddish pink sky bidding farewell to the day! Picture taken at Srirangam, Tamil Nadu.
Do read the interesting story of White Tower – Vellayi Gopuram of Srirangam.
Down south they say Building a gopuram and bringing up a child are similar !!
