Peterskirche – St. Peter’s Church: Walking Tour Vienna
During our walking tour of Vienna we veered into a narrow lane and were astounded to find this beautiful green patina domed St. Peter’s Church. We reached oldest religious site that once had the oldest church of Vienna. In the early middle ages, around late 4th century, this place had a church, but sadly nothing of it remains.
After that a Romanesque church came up in the same place established by Charlemagne (Charles I) in around 800AD. But again there are no remains of that church too. What we see today is a lavishly decorated baroque church! It ranks in oldest churches of Vienna.
It is small compared to St Stephen’s Church nevertheless it has a calm aura around it that attracts you to it.
History and Interesting Details
Famous Gabriel Montani designed it in 1702. Hildebrandt, the noted architect of the Belvedere Palace, completed the building in 1732.
Interior of St Peters Church Vienna
The green copper dome looked very attractive, and the interior is dazzling with fine architectural details and walls adorned with amazing huge sized paintings.

Medieval Art and Architecture in Peterskirche Vienna
The artwork belongs to 18th century. Frescoes, gilded carved wood and altar pieces are stunning to say the least. Do look around for these notable artworks:
- the glass-crowned galleries high on the walls to either side of the altar,
- the tableau of the martyrdom of St. John Nepomuk, and
- the fresco in the dome by J. M. Rottmayr depicting the Coronation of the Virgin.

This church is easy to spot because of its green colored dome. It is located just off the Graben Street. If you are going up or down the Graben, St. Peter’s is well worth a stop.

It is a beautiful painting, Indrani! And I love the dome. Fantastic photos.
How lucky you are to have been there in person. By the way, I love copper when it has a green patina. 🙂
The Madonna and Child is absolutely beautiful. The exterior of the church is fascinating in it's own way.
A beautiful painting, Indrani. And I do like the copper dome. I always recognize copper by the colour it becomes when it oxidizes.
