One Day Itinerary for Udaipur City Rajasthan

My recent visit to Udaipur City in Rajasthan brought back wonderful memories of the great experiences in Udaipur I had around a decade back. Walking through the streets, through the ramparts of Sajjangarh Fort, eating in the restaurants of Udaipur, I was engulfed with nostalgia. This visit was special for me because I was with Times Rajasthan Cuisine trail, tasting the delightful mouth watering dishes of Rajasthan. This travel blog of one day itinerary for Udaipur City concentrates on best things to do in Udaipur.

How to Reach Udaipur City

This time I arrived in Udaipur via road from Jodhpur. I returned by flight to Bangalore from Udaipur. Distance from Jodhpur to Udaipur is 305.6 km. It took us around five hours with a small tea break at Hotel Baba Ramdev in Vera Vilpur. Tea was served in a kulhad, earthen cup, it smells too good. I love such small experiences which city life denies us.

I did quick souvenir shopping here, picked up a small stone grinder, green marble handcrafted mortar and pestle, for 250 INR. After all the tasting of aromatic delicious food of Rajasthan, I felt inspired to use freshly ground spices to enhance the flavour of my home cooked food.

Udaipur is well connected to other cities of India by air, road and rail. It doesn’t have an international airport yet though.

Where to Stay in Udaipur City

It was past evening when we arrived in Chunda Palace Hotel in Udaipur City. After a quick check-in to our rooms we had dinner in the rooftop restaurant of Chunda Palace. Spectacular, much beyond that actually, Chunda Palace is the best boutique heritage hotel in Udaipur. It offers luxurious accommodation with lavish hospitality near Lake Pichola. My room had royal furnishings and furniture. The chairs were at least a century old, I was told.

My stay here was for two nights. I had dinner and breakfast in Chunda Palace.

Ferry ride from Udai Vilas to Ambrai Ghat

The dinner for the second night was at Ambrai Restaurant. Reaching Ambrai restaurant by road would have taken a long time, instead we took the ferry from Udaivilas Jetty. What a mesmerizing experience! The hotels and temples lined along the shore of Lake Pichola were lit up colorfully. The still lake surface, disturbed by our motor boat, distorted the reflection of the moon. I wanted the time to stand still to help me absorb the aura of the lake, but that never happened. The moments got etched permanently in the pages of my memory lane!

Where to Eat in Udaipur City

Like all cities of Rajasthan, Udaipur has a good range of restaurants suiting all kinds of budget. Pricing often depends on the location of the hotels. Charming lake-side restaurants, aesthetic cafes and old time outlets, you can choose to suit your time and pocket.

Dinner in Chunda Palace rooftop restaurant – the buffet spread was simply amazing. This rooftop restaurant of Chunda Palace boutique hotel must be visited for the best views of Udaipur. Many restaurants claim to serve the most rewarding views; but my night at the rooftop of the hotel compels me to give it a full ten on ten. The restaurant serves delectable Indian breads, curries – both, veg and nonveg dishes, lentils, and desserts among a wide array of multi-cuisine fare.

Breakfast at Chunda Palace – Their breakfast menu is pretty impressive with continental, north Indian and south Indian fares. I helped myself with dosa and idli just to see how well they prepare them, though it doesn’t go well with the theme of the cuisine trail. Mmmm… not bad!

Lunch at Natraj Dining Hall and Restaurant – I had the most delicious vegetarian Rajasthani Thali here. With unlimited refills and a variety of side dishes, I had to control my taste buds from demanding more. The restaurant is full during lunch time on Sundays with no place to stand. Their first floor offers North Indian, Chinese, and other fast-food items. The efficiency and swiftness with which their staff serve the dishes one after another, and clean up after the guests leave is worth watching.

Natraj Dining Hall is located near the Udaipur City Railway Station.
Open timings – 10.30 AM to 3.45 PM, 6.30 PM to 10.45 PM.
Cost for a plate – approx. 600 INR for two people.

Dinner at Ambrai Restaurant – This is the most iconic restaurant in Udaipur. While relishing their traditional Rajasthani Cuisine, my eyes feasted on the views of Jagdish Temple, City Palace, and other major landmarks.
