Maternity Photo Shoot Indoors and Outdoors
My friend in her advanced stage of pregnancy asked me to do a photo shoot of her. This was out of the blue for me! As a travel photographer, always out in the open, the idea of shooting indoors with limited light unnerved me.
The idea was to include her elder daughter in the maternity photo shoot poses. Her daughter is a bubbly little thing aged around 2½ years. Her due date was approaching fast and before the new one popped out she wanted these final stages of her with child (children) well framed.
Since we knew each other well I took up the task, hoping she would forgive me if the results were disastrous.
Prior to this I have done a painting – Copy of Jamini Roy’s “Mother and Child”. You can well imagine how unsure I was about my photography skills of capturing this unique bonding of a mother with her child and another yet to born child.
Maternity Photo Shoot Indoors
I thoroughly enjoyed the maternity photo shoot, framing the poses, compiling the pictures and finally writing this blogpost. I have added pregnancy quotes and saying with the pictures. These should remind some sweet moments to those of you who have experienced this phase. This definitely is a phase worthy of capturing forever through a photograph!
The ‘mom to be’ had clear cut out ideas how the composition should turn out, that made my job very easy. Choosing maternity photo shoot dresses can be tricky. The pictures had to reflect elegance hiding all wobbly bits, and she chose some ideal matching photo shoot dresses. Both mom and daughter had white and black combination of dresses.
A crisp white-grey curtain made the backdrop. With faint light passing through, the forms got definite shape. The little one was more than willing to give the photo shoot poses. A good level of acquaintance and friendliness with kids is helpful in maternity photo shoot poses.
Maternity Photo Shoot Outdoors
A couple of pictures were taken outdoors too. Quick change of dress and with maternity photoshoot props the scene got better. This was easier with good amount of sunlight. We just had to get the little one in her best moods and surprisingly this was the easiest.
The photo shoot got over in few minutes. It was like a story telling event, the characters in the story happily depicting theirs. The little one was super excited, loved her for that!
Tell me which of these you liked the best?

And I am happy to add that my friend is blessed with a girl baby. The little girl here is now the elder sister and very possessive about her new sister. May God bless them!
Those are beautiful photos! I was not able to take a lot of photos while I was pregnant with my son, so I will make sure to do so on my next pregnancy! I was able to experience something like this, though, when we had a maternity photo shoot at work. It is just unfortunate that my baby bump was not yet too visible at the time, as I was only in my 4th month. It would be lovely to take photos with a prominent bump and show it to the child when she is bigger! 🙂
Great shots my favorite was the 2nd color picture, I love all the black and white. Every picture was amazing to be honest, you did a great job, I’ve never had a maternity photoshot, I wish I had
You took great shots. The indoor photos look classy. Meanwhile, the outdoor photos look vibrant. I couldn’t choose a best one. The photos all seem touching and tugs the heartstrings.
How nice of you to take these photos for your friend. Maternity shoots are so special, but the fact that you did it for her makes it even more wonderful. I think it’s a brilliant idea to include her other child in the photos. She adds more warmth and joy in the photos, I think. Very nice photos! 🙂 All of them are so sweet! And your friend is beautiful!
The photos are lovely and I liked the black and white photos more than the colored ones. I’ve never had a maternity shoot when I was pregnant because all I did was lie down and endure the scourge of gestational diabetes and hyperemesis gravidarum. I think if I get pregnant again and if it will be a stress-free pregnancy then I will consider a photoshoot. Thank you for sharing.
What lovely pictures! How sweet that your friend asked you to take them. And how nice that she included her daughter as well. I like the photo where the little girl is almost hiding her face because it is so cute and child-like.
To be honest I am half-hearted about maternity photoshoots. Just like the pre-nup photos/videos, suddenly it has become a thing. Now all my pregnant friends are engaging in maternity photo shoots I was like, what is going on? The reason I’m weirded out is because none of them looked good, well not as tacky as Beyonce’s latest pregnancy shoot but yeah, I just didn’t like their photos. But I think you might have changed my mind, at least this one here looks simple and not over the top. The first photo for one is amazing.
Wow! amazing shots 🙂 this is one of my future dreams. To have a maternity shoot taken by my hubby! I love your black and white shot because of the message of it. Such a purity and moments to treasure of that never fails whenever we had a b/w filters tho. I am glad you had fun shooting it with your pretty baby girl and your soon to be baby
I love photography too! I am still new in this hobby but I’m trying to learn the basics. I personally think that you actually did well. I mean doing this for the first time especially that if you shoot mostly travel photos (I assume it’s more of landscapes?) is something you really did well as first timer. There are room for improvements but keep shooting. 🙂
I am a hobbyist photographer and I must say got a good line up of camera but the last pregnancy of my wife was a total mess. I wasnt to make any single photo of her tummy instead we did a bit of travels. It was a very frustrating moment. Good thing also is that my wife is not so fond of being the subject of the camera. Great photos by the way and the black and whites are gorgeous.
It never fails. Choosing from the series of photos you have taken, I like the B/W ones the best. In fact, I think black and white photos tend to evoke an emotional response than colored ones.
I especially love the scene where the mom is holding her child and kissing by the window. That is a great shot right there.
You did it really well Indrani!
