Lavazza Coffee in Turin: Italy’s Most Favorite Espresso
Do you know what is the most popular Italian coffee brand?
Lavazza Coffee will rank high in this list. Of course it faces fierce competition from another brand, the Illy coffee. Lavazza coffee originated in Turin. First historical manufacturing unit of Lavazza coffee was built in Turin in 1895.
Lavazza Coffee Espresso
I got my first taste of Espresso here.
Espresso is a full-flavored, concentrated form of coffee that is served in “shots.” They make it by forcing pressurized hot water through very finely ground coffee beans using an espresso machine.
The cup had this precious drink, a small layer! It was served with a sachet of sugar. I had it without crema, but as an after thought I felt I should have tried with cream. Add crema for rich flavor and lingering aftertaste of espresso.
It has more concentrated levels of caffeine per ounce. If you are not habituated to this kind of concentration it can leave you sleepless. But then this is much less than a cup of drip coffee.
They say this coffee has been found to be full of a wide variety of antioxidants. So there are benefits too. Though my intention of having it was only to get the local flavor and not for health.
Blend of Lavazza
Luigi Lavazza founded in 1895, the Lavazza coffee company in Turin. The coffee was bought raw, and then roasted and blended according to very personal recipes depending on the customers’ requests.
The blend is 70% Arabica beans sourced from Central America and Brazil. Remaining 30% is Robusta beans from Indonesia.Today Lavazza is the undisputed market leader of espresso in Italy (with almost 45% of the total coffee market in 2004) and is present in over 60 countries.
And I am glad I had this coffee in its place of origin! Almost all restaurants have this on their menu and it is hard to ignore.
