Himachali Cap, a Souvenir from Himachal Pradesh
Himachali Cap is the most celebrated handicraft item of Himachal Pradesh. They are called Himachali Topi. Other names for Himachali cap are Bushehri topi, Pahari topi, Kinnauri topi.
It is a distinctive headdress associated with Himachal Pradesh’s culture. It is a part of the traditional dress of many Pahari inhabitants. The extreme cold climate of these regions has made people weave different kinds of warm clothing, including shawls and caps.
These caps are woven with wool and are ideal protective head gear for the people of these cold regions. Only the front half portion has the embroidered design. Visit Himachal Pradesh during festivals and you will see an ocean of colors and designs. It was easy for me to decide which souvenir is to be carried back home from Kufri!
Choosing a good design was tricky because all the designs were good. The caps are small, soft and very easy on pocket. Don’t forget to pick one when you are there. I picked up one for Rs.175 and I see some online marketing sites selling them at Rs.500+!!!
Our World Tuesday
beautiful design and colors on cap and can say a travel gift.
amazingly done .. 🙂
Years before I went to himachal and liked a himachali cap with golden embossing in red border. but was prevented by the tailor stiching the cap. That cap was meant for the Village head. Thanks for sharing the information.
Looks like a Kullu Topi.
I brought 5 of them !
I love these Himachali caps!! We had visited Kullu Manali way back in 1990 and had returned with caps for all my uncles.
Very attractive.
When we were in Kufri, we'd rented the whole outfit to take a few pics. What fun! 🙂
Yay! I have one of these too 🙂
I got one Indrani 🙂
keeps brains warm 😉
Thanks for the post. I've always wondered about the name of this cap.
I visited Himachal a few months back and saw a variety of things including caps. The caps displayed by you have unique designs and make me realize that I did not see them properly during my visit. Thanks for sharing them.

Beautiful design, a perfect souvenir.
About the price, 175 and 500+, that's a huge difference. :O
Saw many of these and they are indeed beautiful. I opted for a woolen cap; suits me better.

A perfect Souvenir from Himachal.. Such a huge price difference… It always happens, the middlemen make money and the true craft person continues to lead the same life…
Nice design!
The way you describe your clicks (sometimes the angle), makes them unique… Wonderful!
beautiful design on the cap. i want one too 🙂
beautiful cap… you captured well
thanks
Very beautiful cap Indrani. Somehow it looks more like weaving than embroidery to me. I used to weave similar braids and our Latvian patterns are similar too, even my name comes from the ancient Sanskrit.
Handsome cap!! Boom & Gary of the Vermilon River, Canada.
Nicely done caps.I had been to Kufri but never struck me to bring one.
Himachal caps are beautiful and unique indeed..
A beautiful cap with a lovely pattern! and good for the cold climate – yes 🙂
That is a lovely design. I can only imagine how hard it would be to select only one.
Intricate, beautiful designs and colors!! Great captures as always, Indrani! Hope you have a great week!
What a beautiful souvenir. I would want one even if I didn't live in a cold climate.
