Faces of India – 257 Vegetable Seller near Bangalore Fort
Faces of India,
Faces of India is a series through which I intend to portray the various characters of my country whom I met during my travels. I bring back souvenirs, frozen moments from my travels, why not some memories of people I have met and interacted during the travels. Faces of India is a weekly series in my blog since MARCH 2011. See more here…
Let me complete the #makeheritagefun event with this faces of India picture. This old vegetable seller was seated in his makeshift market place just outside the Bangalore Fort. While we were focusing on the fort, this man kept trying to attract our attention and make some sales. He wasn’t begging or pleading, it was clear sales pitch: Rs.10 for 2 raw bananas. None of us wanted to make any purchase then but he did catch my attention.
I knelt down to talk to him. After hearing me he said, “I don’t understand Hindi”.
So I switched to speaking in Tamil. I asked him about his life there and whether he makes enough for his family.
He said he has been around this place for more than 60 years.
He is all alone and doesn’t depend on anybody.
He makes his living by selling vegetables and that is enough for him.
He then asked me some questions: How come you are speaking in so many languages? How did you learn them?
Just the other day, I noticed that this series is i think more than a year old…awesome isn’t it 🙂 and best is its not boring yet 🙂 awesome 🙂
This series is 5 years old Shweta. Glad that you like it. 🙂
Great portrait! People are so interesting! I love hearing their stories!!
This series of yours is one of my favorites. There is so much that is special about India. I can’t believe that in my “senior” years, I’ve spent two years of the last four in this country so far from my home, traveling alone. Of course, thanks to all my years of Royal Caribbean cruising, with so many Indian crew members, I have many friends and it has been such a joy seeing them in India, meeting their families and becoming so attached to your incredible country.
Typical Face of Bangalore Streets and Markets.. Indirectly these Personalities do a Yeoman Service to the people around by becoming a supply chain in their food supply.. Thanks for sharing a valuable Post,Indrani!
Awww…I’d have bought some bananas even if I didn’t want any and would have given them to someone. Lovely face.
True Indrani, how did you learn so many of them?
It’s amazing to see him content with his life selling bananas. Interesting find, Indrani.
Hair details are just awesome! good shot.
What an interesting encounter! I don’t blame him, I’d want to know why you speak so many languages as well!
A great portrait Indrani. As always 🙂
Fantastic portrait. You are so great at capturing the people who see.

Nice portrait Indrani..
amazing, as usual. hats off to u.
He looks as if he’s seen a lot in his life.
Looks like he only sells bananas and that too of poor quality.
Another noble human brother
Great portrait and he looks courageous even at this age and standing on his foot!
