Faces of India – 252, Flower Seller with Confidence
Faces of India… Flower Seller
Faces of India is a series through which I intend to portray the various characters of my country whom I met during my travels. I bring back souvenirs, frozen moments from my travels, why not some memories of people I have met and interacted during the travels. Faces of India is a weekly series in my blog since MARCH 2011. See more here…
If you go by her looks and think she is old, fragile and must be docile then you are seriously wrong! I too approached her with the same thoughts in mind. She was sitting in front of the restaurant where we had breakfast, in one of the busy streets of Bangalore. While eating I watched her selling flowers and felt sorry she had to work at this age too. So I decided to contribute something to her earnings.
After breakfast I approached her to buy her flowers. Before she answered to my question how much the strings sell for, she almost had a small packet of stringed flowers ready. I realized her rates were much higher than the normal rates. She kept muttering how she has to complete the sales.
Some how I picked up the courage to ask her for a pic for my faces of India series. Instantly she replied; Everybody keeps taking my pic for free. And she smiled.
I went dumb! At this age what confidence she has of her looks. I took out a tenner for her and she seemed happy. She gave me her best ‘simple poses’. After this brief episode she gave me some of her roses.
Her wrinkled face says it all, bless her heart. I wonder how old she really is. I could not get down like that, with knees bent, or I would never get up. I love hot baths but, nowadays, that’s a pleasure off limits for me – I can’t get out of the tub!!! My orthopedist says I need total knee replacements but I’m not that miserable yet. Maybe I can win the lottery and buy a tub that will eject you when you done with your soaking!!
I love the picture.
True faces of India, keep it up
Lovely gesture Indrani. You made her day 🙂
Lucky you! I once asked a tribal lady in Kanha if I could click her picture. She asked with gestures how much I will pay for a click. I started at ten and she went all mad. I went up till fifty and then I quit. Some people (especially old women) are not what seem to be.
I’m sure it must be ones of the best capture after all she stunned you by that reply

It’s a lovely portrait. Enjoy your day Indrani.
Lovely portrait of this sweet lady. I admire how these older women can sit in this position….of course they’ve had a lot of practice, but still!
I admire women like this. They keep strong and healthy and they know how to take care of themselves.
Her self-confidence even at this age should be appreciated! Although feel sorry for her to work at this age, this is what supposed to keeps her going and hope she continues working to stay strong and healthy. Well shot!
Though her spirit is appreciative ,feel saddened looking at her frail appearance. She reminds me of my old granny.I can only say may god bless her.
What a great capture for the day, Indrani! What a spirited lady she is!!
