Faces of India – 237 Sadhu from Kankalitala from Bengal

Another saffron man, a Sadhu from Kankalitala, from my collection of faces of India. He was seated among a group of sadhus in front of Kankalitala Temple in Bolpur, West Bengal. Most sadhus of Bengal have a lot of passion for the worship of Goddess Kali.

Like the other sadhus whom I have met, this sadhu too wasn’t keen to speak to me. If you drop something into their bowls they don’t mind the number of pictures you take. I don’t know how much they earn through out the day, but they continue to sit there in front of the temple day after day. The saffron colored clothing, symbolizes their sannyāsa (renunciation).

Kankalitala is one of the famous 52 pilgrim sites associated with Sati, wife of Lord Shiva. Situated at a distance of about 10km from Bolpur, this temple is a must-see site.

Faces of India,

Faces of India is a series through which I intend to portray the various characters of my country whom I met during my travels. I bring back souvenirs, frozen moments from my travels, why not some memories of people I have met and interacted during the travels. Faces of India is a weekly series in my blog since MARCH 2011.
