Faces of India – 237 Sadhu from Kankalitala from Bengal
Another saffron man, a Sadhu from Kankalitala, from my collection of faces of India. He was seated among a group of sadhus in front of Kankalitala Temple in Bolpur, West Bengal. Most sadhus of Bengal have a lot of passion for the worship of Goddess Kali.
Like the other sadhus whom I have met, this sadhu too wasn’t keen to speak to me. If you drop something into their bowls they don’t mind the number of pictures you take. I don’t know how much they earn through out the day, but they continue to sit there in front of the temple day after day. The saffron colored clothing, symbolizes their sannyāsa (renunciation).
Kankalitala is one of the famous 52 pilgrim sites associated with Sati, wife of Lord Shiva. Situated at a distance of about 10km from Bolpur, this temple is a must-see site.
Faces of India,
Faces of India is a series through which I intend to portray the various characters of my country whom I met during my travels. I bring back souvenirs, frozen moments from my travels, why not some memories of people I have met and interacted during the travels. Faces of India is a weekly series in my blog since MARCH 2011. See more here…

The orange makes him quite photogenic. I wouldn’t have a clue as to how much money to place in his bowl!
Any amount would do. 🙂
How alluring your captures are Indrani!
Thank you Chaitali!
Excellent portrait!! I have seen Sadhus in Thiruvannamalai and they don’t come and ask for anything, but accept whatever we give.
Yes Jeevan so right you are!
he looks quite serious … Nice shot
Seldom will you see them smile. Thank you Swati. 🙂
Very good close-up. I have noticed to that sadhus just let you click away if you drop money in their bowl.
You Know it so well. 🙂
another great picture
Thank you Onkar!
Thank you Ajish, I am so glad you liked it.
This is actually awesome. I have seen some offbeat locations to include in my travels. Do you have any particular suggestions for Kerala and Tamil Nadu?
Hi Anurag if you are going to wayanad area there is a haunted tree, edakkal caves with inscriptions from pre historic time. Tamil nadu is a land of temples, but if you are interested you can see Gandhiji’s blood stained clothes in a museum in Madurai.
Wow! Thanks!
You are welcome! 🙂
Well captured, thoughtful

Thank you Swati.
Wonderful!
Thank you Amitji!
Alright, I do have to ask – do you have a ‘vacation’ job? You have been to so many places!
Hi Anurag these are from vacations in past few years. I am converting the memories into a job called blogging. 🙂
