Faces of India – 155, Meendhora from Sundarbans
Faces of India
a series through which I intend to portray the various characters of my country whom I met during my travels. I bring back souvenirs, frozen moments from my travels, why not some memories of people I have met and interacted during the travels. Faces of India is a weekly series in my blog since MARCH 2011. See more here…
A meendhora (one who catches fish) from Sunderbans, West Bengal while at work. Read about them at: The Meendharas of Sunderbans.
The determination on her face says a lot. Tough life!
that is a strong lady 🙂
The Meendhara woman is beauiful Indrani,
I read your Post describing the work women like her are doing in the water.
What a different reason to be in water.
I can only admire and respect women like her. I have nothing else to offer.
But I do find myself often thinking that no matter what hardships women endure in India, they still retain the beauty and essence of womanhood, just like this woman portrays.
I wonder how many women could wear a sari and prepare a meal like women in India do without setting themselves on fire.
Or sweeping dirt floors in a sari and still remain clean and dignified.
Or wear a sari and trudge through sticky muddy waters for most of the day like the woman in your photo and still remain looking as feminine as she does.
A difficult life she does live.
Yet she is also a testament to the strength of women, and to me represents the worthwhileness in remaining feminine whatever the circumstances.
Thank you for sharing such special moments from your travels.
Looks like tough work and a strong woman.
