Faces of India – 154 Baluchari Silk Saree Weaver
Faces of India
a series through which I intend to portray the various characters of my country whom I met during my travels. I bring back souvenirs, frozen moments from my travels, why not some memories of people I have met and interacted during the travels. Faces of India is a weekly series in my blog since MARCH 2011. See more here…
A Baluchari silk sari weaver, from Bishnupur, West Bengal. The room was quite dimly lit, I was wondering how the weaver worked in such low light. The electricity charges are high he said.
You can meet a Kanchipuram Silk Weaver here…
Makes one so sad to see the conditions in which our artisans work. Great click!
Thanks for the comments friends.
CHC sorry I don't have the video of weaving.
Seeta, this series has a face from Kanchipuram, FOI – 76
Common Indian has so much patience…sometimes..It's a boon and curse too.:)
His face resembles a person I know 🙂
Nice pic, Indrani!
wish we could really uplift such lives…
Wonderful picture 🙂
the story of half of the indians .. high electricity price .. !
Hi Indrani,
The series Faces of India is truly an exciting journey and the posts help everyone of us to see something new about our beautiful country. Thanks for sharing these beautiful faces of India.
Oh this is a good subject for a series.. if you happen to get a chance do visit Kanchipuram, its about 4-5 hours from B'lore… you will get to see quite a fewweaving cooperatives .. these weavers even work individually and sell Saris right at their door step.
Seeing his tough life I feel that we are all very ungrateful for the things that we have. An hours power-cut and we people crib and then there are those who have such a tough time keeping bills low and payable.
Do you have a video of how they weave the silk? Or is it available anywhere? I would love to see it. They put so much of hardwork behind a beautiful finished product. Great pic!
Nice portrait
It must be fascinating to watch him work.. even in the under lit room
I really like the intense concentration you've captured on his face.
Great capture. I know it must be hard work in those conditions.
He'll ruin his eyes in the long run; a shame. But the lighting here is beautiful….
Nice pics
Hard working and industrious – see the intense concentration !
I heard about the silk sarees,All are really wonderful.
You tell so much with this series

i am sorry if his eyesight suffers.
That's a hard environment to work in, but then we're very spoiled in this country as to working conditions. Another terrific capture in your series, Indrani. Thank you for sharing!
