Europe’s Most Beautiful Balcony, Luxembourg City

After the visit to the cathedral of Luxembourg City we walked through Chemin de la Corniche, which is also known as Europe’s ‘most beautiful balcony’. It is a network of pedestrianised cobbled streets in the Old Town part of the city. For three centuries from 16th to 19th, till its walls were dismantled Luxembourg was one of Europe’s greatest fortified cities.

More than 24kms of underground defences have been dismantled only a few elements survive. Today as you take the walk you can see the ruined fort walls of the city and it is equally interesting to see the contrasting modern buildings rising just by its side. Luxembourg City has got UNESCO World Heritage site status in1994.

The shot below is for SkyWatch Friday. It is the Monument of Rememberance, known as Gëlle Fra. It is a war memorial in Luxembourg City opened in 1923. You can read about how it was damaged in WWI, dismantled and restored in its wikilink.
