Church of St John the Baptist at Beguinage Brussels, Belgium
The Church of St John the Baptist at Beguinage Brussels is a Roman Catholic parish church. We had included this in our itinerary for self guided walking tour of Brussels.
Beguines – who are they?
Beguines have a sad and interesting story of their origin as a community. Beguines were a community of women whose husbands and fathers did not return from wars and medieval military expeditions. Left with no male member for their care they resorted to forming a community of their own to look after their needs. They did not enter convents.
These women took up charitable work and followed enclosed living system. The place where they joined together to live began to be called as beguinage.
