On returning, I prepared this Dharamshala Travel guide with list of best things to do, places to visit in and Kangra and travel tips. Dharamshala is a perfect destination for seekers of tranquility and nature enthusiasts alike.

It won’t be wrong to say Dharamshala is a Haven in the Himalayas! It is with a sense of anticipation I embarked on my trip to Dharamshala. The town is divided into two distinct parts: the lower region, known as Dharamshala, and the upper region called McLeod Ganj. While Dharamshala serves as the administrative headquarters, McLeod Ganj is renowned as the residence of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and the heart of the Tibetan community in exile.

Dharamshala Travel Guide

Kangra Valley nestled in lap of Dhauladhar range of Himalayas

If you are wondering what makes Dharamshala special, let me explain its unique characteristics: the presence of the Tibetan government-in-exile infuses the town with a rich Tibetan culture and spirituality, drawing visitors from around the world who seek solace and enlightenment. The tranquil monasteries, prayer flags fluttering in the breeze, and the melodic chants of Buddhist hymns create an atmosphere of serenity that envelops you the moment you arrive.

To most tourists, tourism in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh is limited to visiting Dharamshala. I know many who landed in Kangra Airport (also called Gaggal Airport) and headed straight to Dharamshala. While Dharamshala, a quaint town of Kangra district, is no doubt a top tourist attraction, there are lot other places to visit in Kangra. Read on to know the places to visit in Kangra.

Bhagsunag Waterfalls

Start the day, when you are full of energy and the sun not so harsh, with a mild trek to Bhagsu Waterfalls. Barely 20 m in height, the scenic setting of the waterfall is what makes it a mesmerizing sight. If you plan to halt for breakfast and some bird photography, the entire experience can take 2 hours.

By walk: Less than 900m of hilly terrain it will take 20mins.
By Car: There is route by car which takes you closer and faster.

No tickets are required, open from 8 AM to 7 PM on all days.

Bhagsunag Waterfalls is the easiest trek from Kangra. You can check the following moderate and difficult camping tours from Kangra district.

  • Triund Trek – moderate – 2800m, 9km gradual trek
  • Winch Camp trek – moderate, parts of the trek is steep – 2440m, trekkers rate this as the most fragrant trek among all!
  • Dhauladhar Round trek – difficult – 7 to 8 days, trek through forests, bird watching and interacting with tribal folks and locals enroute.

Bhagsunag Temple

For the spiritually inclined souls, the Bhagsunag temple at the start of the trek makes an ideal halt. This temple was damaged extensively in a cloudburst caused floods in the region in 2007. Bhagsunag Temple was rebuilt with help of Gorkha Rifles regiment of Indian Army.

Please follow dress code if you intend to offer prayers at the temple. No photography allowed inside however plenty of photo opportunities just outside the temple. There is a natural fresh water spring falling into a tank, devotees take a dip here.

Open timings – after sunrise to before sunset. No tickets required.

Other temples of Kangra:

  • Brijeshwari Temple – 1500 years old
  • Baijnath Temple – 9th century temple dedicated to Lord Shiva.
  • Masroor temple – 9th century rock cut temple like Ellora Temple, dedicated to Lord Ram.

Norbulingka Institute

This institute works towards conserving the unique identity of Tibetans and their sacred Tibetan traditions. They impart training in various disciplines.

Stepping into the Norbulingka Institute was like stepping into a mini Japanese garden with sounds of gurgling water, chirping birds and giggling children. It was a different world! A guided tour around the institute introduced us to the artisans getting trained in art forms like Thangka Painting, Thangka Applique, statue making, wood carving, wood painting, tailoring and weaving. I was most impressed by their Doll Museum!

At the heart of the institute there is an imposing statue of seated Buddha. The face is made of pure gold and the arms are gold coated.

While the ticket costs 110 INR (50INR for locals) the guided tour is free. The guide explains the different processes involved and the various courses conducted by the institute which I found really beneficial. It can be a little overwhelming to tour on your own and just seeing the processes.

Open Timings: The Institute is open on all days 9 AM to 5.30 PM. The workshops and office are closed on all Sundays and 2nd Saturday of each month.

Monasteries of Kangra Valley

Dharamshala in Kangra is home to many world-famous monasteries. You can make an exclusive tour just to visit the monasteries or just choose few to get a feel of the power of silence prevailing in these monasteries. Here are a couple of them we visited.

His Holiness Dalai Lama’s Main Temple

Located in McLeod Ganj, this monastery is very close to the residence of Dalai Lama. He visits this temple twice or thrice every year to preach and bless as locals and tourists throng to hear Him. During rest of the year also the temple witnesses moderate crowd of tourists. You can indulge in meditation in the hall of this temple as long as you wish. A small counter within the temple sells prayer beads.

Turning the prayer wheels as you go around the temple is another fav of the locals there. It was the first time I did the act of turning the wheels in clock-wise direction as I went around chanting Om Mani Padme Hum!

A museum right at the entrance has rare photographs of Dalai Lama, how he escaped from Tibet. Tibetan culture, martyrs and others subjects too are on display here.  Do plan your visit time to see short video about the culture played in the museum. During His Holiness Dalai Lama’s visit here the security check process is stricter.

Gyuto Tantric Monastery Temple

Gyuto Monastery is one of the best places to visit in Dharamshala. With its yellow exteriors and backdrop of snow capped mountains, the monastery looked stunning. I stood transfixed at the first sight and secretly desired to just stand and watch for hours.

This monastery imparts education in tantric rituals and Buddhist philosophy. Gyuto Monastery was founded in Tibet in 1474 by the main disciple of the first Dalai Lama, Jetsun Kunga Dhondup. In 1959 after the Chinese invasion, the monastery was re-established in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh India.

When we arrived at the monastery the students were having their recess. Young kid monks in their maroon robes were indulging in a game of cricket, some chasing around each other, while some were busy snacking.

No tickets required and tour time is around half an hour. Photography allowed.

Kangra Fort

And Kangra district has a superb destination for architecture and history lovers. They can head to Kangra Fort and wind up the day capturing a romantic sunset there. Kangra Fort was badly mutilated and dismantled in an earthquake in 1905. Much of its glory came crashing down then. It is sad that no government has taken up the task of restructuring and conferring its past glory.

A facade of temple is all that remains of a beautiful Lakshmi Narayan temple that stood there once. The seven floors of the palace that stood tall on top of the fort, home to several generations of kings and queens – nothing remains of that except the plan! Read more: Exploring Kangra Fort

Masrur Caves in Kangra

Masrur Temples also referred to as Masroor Temples or Rock-cut Temples at Masrur, an early 8th-century complex of rock-cut Hindu temples, is one of the top places to visit in Kangra. The temples face northeast, towards the Dhauladhar range of the Himalayas and have a North Indian Nagara architecture style.

  • Kangra Valley sounds like a great place for a retreat. I especially like the trek to the Bhagsu Waterfalls. The monastries would be great for a culture shot. Gyuto Monastery would top the list for me with its gorgeous mountainous backdrop.

  • Oh my goodness, I visited the Himalayas a few years back and can’t seem to get it out of my head! Everything about it is so serene. Would love to go back and visit Kangra. Though, I wonder whether the luxury hotel would defeat some of the peace that people who visit seek?

  • Would really love to check out the Kangra Valley. The man-made buildings like the temples do look stunning but for me its the natural landscape. We huge mountain ranges, beautiful valley and waterfalls, this looks like an ideal hiking place in the warmer months.

  • I actually have never heard about Kangra district of Himachal but it looks like a wonderful place with so much to do ! For me even the mountains view would be enough but wow there are other things to see! Amazing! I must have plan a trip there one day!

  • The area around Kangra Valley really does have a lot to offer. Gorgeous photo of the Himalayas. I love waterfalls and the idea of having breakfast next to the Bhagsu Waterfall. It would be really special to visit the Dalai Lama’s Main Temple.

  • I can sort of understand why people might head straight to Dharamshala. But good to know there is also lots to do in Kangra Valley. Visiting waterfalls is always a great draw for us. Good to know you can walk or get closer by car to see Bhagsunag Waterfalls. There are definitely some interesting monasteries to visit. I love that mountain backdrop at the Gyuto Tantric Monastery. Sounds like the Hyatt was a great base to explore Kangra Valley for the day.

The waterfall is so pretty – and you’re right about setting out in the morning before the sun and heat hit. The fort looks so interesting to explore. I’m a big fan of relics and stone structures. The monasteries look interesting, too. I love that you highlighted some of the lesser, yet still worthy, attractions!

  • Hi Indrani, thanks for the lovely blog on Kangra. You have mentioned of a lot of things that I was unaware of, for example the newly launched luxury hotel over there Bhagsu Waterfalls, and many more like Norbulingka Institute and all. I love the Tibetan Buddhist temple and HH Dalai Lama’s residence.
