Dahlia Flowers: Enchanting Petal Patterns and Colors
How many petals does this Dahlia have? I never tried to count the petals of Dahlia Flowers, but just gazing at the picture makes me feel as if I am lost in those petals.
It does give the feel as if the number of petals belongs to Fibonacci series but it is hard to prove because the petals are arranged in several layers. It is easier to prove Fibonacci series in single layered flowers like Daisy, Buttercups or Lily. Nature and Mathematics converge here in such a beautiful manner!

Dahlia Flowers meaning
Dahlia is a mix of sunflowers and asters hence has various meanings in the language of flowers. Gift dahlia flowers to wish good luck, express support and commitment. Dahlia flowers are associated with kindness and love for others, commitment and honesty.
Multi Colored Dahlia Flowers
Selective breeding and hybridizing dahlia plants is one of the favorite experiments of Dahlia growers. Successful experiments have produced a largest array of forms, colors, sizes and patterns. 20th century saw around 50,000 varieties developed and registered in 570 individual classes!
Lal Bagh botanical garden of Bangalore too has a wide variety of Dahlia plants in the little dahlia garden. They have successfully grown dahlias in pots. Growing dahlias in pots is a wonderful way to make a pretty balcony garden.
More new forms, colors, and sizes are being added in Lalbagh. The sections of the flower display with Dahlias keep both bees and photographers busy.
Here are a couple of multicolored Dahlias.
Observe the differences in colors, petal shapes and the way they bend inwards and outwards… small details but these features make them look so different.
Yellow Dahlia
Plain, uncomplicated colors are sometimes such joy to see! Yellow in flowers radiates so much of optimism and happiness, nothing else dispels gloom like yellow does.

Dahlia Profile
A section of flower shows in Lal Bagh, Bangalore is always dominated by Dahlia Flowers. A wide variety of this species is presented. The sizes the fully matured blooming dahlia flowers attain are sometimes as big as dinner plates. The shades of colors are amazing; when so many are placed together it is almost a riot.
Dahlia is the national flower of Mexico and is named after the 18th century botanist Anders Dahl. A Dahlia profile below.
The crowded yet organized petals of dahlia flowers amazes me. Can you draw flower petals of Dahlia? Let me know in comments.
Did you know Dahlias are one of the favorite flowers of Chefs, besides being favorite of florists, gardeners and brides? These gorgeous flowers are used to enhance the aesthetics of the food displayed. Veggie platters, party punch bowls, appetizer trays, salads look most tempting with the addition of these flowers.
Culinary training courses include chapters on cooking with flowers, floral decoration of food. Dahlia plants are known to have medicinal properties.
Dahlia plant was used as a treatment for epilepsy. Herbal medicines use a substance called Atlantic starch, derived from the tubers of dahlias. This was a treatment for diabetes before the discovery of insulin.
