Explore Cathedral St Pietro in Mantua Italy
Walking through the streets of Mantua City center offers you a range of visual treats. With its old buildings preserved so well it seems the medieval times has frozen here. I saw various impressive buildings, mostly churches and castles. Admiring these monuments don’t require any guide, I just kept strolling at a pace dictated by my heart which was so much at peace.

Cathedral of San Pietro Mantua
One striking facade was that of Cathedral of St Pietro; huge and grand in appearance. After tour of Palazzo Ducal Mantua we arrived at this Mantua Cathedral. The angelic forms in the pillars, arches were soothing, the details very interesting. Cathedral of St Pietro is a must halt in your itinerary of walking tour in Mantua map.
It is the burial church of Conossa and Gonzaga family. Prior to this Italian Cathedral there existed a structure in ancient times and then another significant building which got damaged in 894AD. This church is a 12th century creation. It was given a touch up and re-touch up in 16thC after it got destroyed in fire.
And in 18th century the facade got a facelift with Carrara marble, giving it a whitish grey appearance. This facade dominates Piazza Sordello which is the main square of Mantua. It has evidences of influences of different architectural styles.
Interior of Cathedral of St Pietro Mantua
Interior of Cathedral of St Pietro is full of art works depicting several saints of those times by talented painters of 16th and 17th centuries. The rose windows in the south side has stunning mix of colors and images.
Details of the stone carvings, woodwork, and mosaics are worth taking the time to appreciate. The ceiling especially has some fantastic work and they are in good condition too.
There are some stunning paintings in the ceiling, fresco in apse, canvas, arches by reputed painters of that era. I was mesmerized by the painting in ceiling of Mantua Cathedral.

Ah, wish I were there! So lovely.
What a unique piece of architecture, this cathedral, Indrani… the mix of the white stone with the red bricks. Even the styles seem discordant! But that is what makes it interesting.
