Faces of India – 306 from Bikaner, Rajasthan

Faces of India

a series through which I intend to portray the various characters of my country whom I met during my travels. I bring back souvenirs, frozen moments from my travels, why not some memories of people I have met and interacted during the travels. Faces of India is a weekly series in my blog since MARCH 2011. I don’t know much about him. He was watching me take pictures in the streets of Bikaner very intently. He would have crossed my path but paused so that my focus wouldn’t get blocked.

After completing the shot I looked at him gratefully for not spoiling my pic. He stood there wondering if I was over with my photography, taking advantage of that I asked him if I could take his too.

He gave me a nod and a quizzical incomplete smile.

Pencil Sketch of Portrait by Shikha Varma

Meanwhile… (updated on 27th January 2018.)

My friend Shikha Varma did a pencil sketch of this portrait. Let me quote her:

Thanks Indrani. I love your blog, the original photo is so powerful. The eyes of the person will haunt you for days. There are so many stories, all through his life, hiding in the wrinkles of this Bikaner man, that’s why I titled it ‘Lifelines’. It took me 3 days. The minute details are very hard on eyes, so have to take break after every 20 min work.

Thank you Shikha, I loved your work.

Painting of the Portrait by Eru Salinas

(…updated on 25th June 2020)

Yet another artist inspired by this same picture. Eru Salinas from Mexico, painted the portrait and shared with me on Pinterest.

Let me quote her

Hi Indrani, I’m a Mexican painter. And I love your photo, so I decide to make an oil paint, the old man looks so expressive to me, so I feel inspiring, and he has a deep look. I like the lights and darks in his face and I take advantage of it to paint it. I love your culture. I read your opinion in your blog and I’m very grateful, I hope that you like my paint, thank you very much. Greetings from Mexico!!!

Yes Eru Salinas, I like your painting very much.
