Faces of India

a series through which I intend to portray the various characters of my country whom I met during my travels. I bring back souvenirs, frozen moments from my travels, why not some memories of people I have met and interacted during the travels. Faces of India is a weekly series in my blog since MARCH 2011. Faces of India Usta Artist

Mr. Ajmal Hussain is an Usta artist. He learned this art as a child from his father M. I. Usta. Ever since he has been dabbling in this Usta art work and intends to continue with his passion in future too. This is the only profession he knows and he promotes it where ever he can. Mr. Ajmal Hussain is a winner of several awards. He is father of 5 children.

Can you guess how long it would have taken to complete this pot made of camel leather with Usta art on it? What would be its cost?

This took one and half months to complete it. Gold leaves have been used to make these designs. It costs Rs. 25,000 only! Is the cost justified for the effort put in? What is your opinion?

  • Great to read about Ajmal Hussain ji.

  • That is an extraordinarily low price for that much labor – it looks amazing. I’m glad you shared this.

  • It is a one-of-a-kind piece of artwork. The bottle is absolutely beautiful!
There is really no true price you can put on such a thing of beauty.
    Thank you for sharing!

  • I would not mind one for myself. Glad you managed to meet the artist behind this art. It is good to know that they still exist and all we can do is encourage this art before it dies.
