Abrupt Change in Weather of Solan, Himachal Pradesh
On our onward journey to Kufri, we halted at Solan; to eat noodles and have garam chai (hot tea). Everything seemed fine, pleasant climate, friends, chatting and all. But suddenly the weather of Solan changed.
Rains in Solan
The morning began with the promise of clear skies, a warmth that wrapped around us like a comforting embrace. We set off from Chandigarh and crossed the undulating roads as we proceeded towards Kufri. I watched through my window seat, absorbing the vibrant colors of the local market and the scent of fresh breeze wafting through the air. It was the perfect day, or so it seemed.
As afternoon approached and we neared Solan, we decided to take a short break to taste the yummy Maggi Noodles of the hills. The weather in Solan shifted with an unpredictability that only nature can command. Dark clouds rolled in, casting a shadow over the town. The air grew thick and still, an eerie calm before the storm. I looked up just in time to see the first drops fall, hesitant at first, then more determined, a sudden deluge that sent people scurrying for cover.
Dhiren was caught without an umbrella, and I did the only thing that felt right—I clicked it. The rain came down in sheets, but instead of discomfort, we all felt a surge of exhilaration. There’s something magical about unexpected rain, the way it cleanses the world and awakens your senses.
It was pelting small ice cubes from above! One by one, hands extended out of the shade to feel the rain drops and catch the falling hail stones. I don’t know if it was the sweet scent in the air or the steam from hot noodles and tea, we experienced an unexpected joy in those moments. Few among us wanted to get drenched right there.
As I stood and stared, it struck me take a video of those few moments. Here is a 30 secs clip of that morning.
Little Joys of Life
This trip to Kufri, and particularly this halt in Solan helped me realize the little joys of life
- Travel with friends
- Break from routine life
- Eating noodles, that too Maggi and sipping hot tea
- Dreaming away while staring at nothing
- Sudden rains that make you pause for a while…
The streets, now glistening with wetness, took on a new character. Colours seemed more vivid; the scents more pronounced. The locals, too, had their own way of responding. Some watched with amusement from under awnings, while others, especially the kids, joined in, splashing through the streets with a spontaneity that was contagious.
The rainstorm, as abruptly as it had started, began to wane. We took the opportunity to set off for the next part of the bus ride to Kufri. The unexpected rain had been a gift, a reminder of the beauty in life’s unpredictability.
These moments—the unplanned, the unforeseen—are the true essence of travel. They are the stories we remember, the experiences that shape us, and the joy that lingers long after the journey ends.
Best Time to Visit Solan
The months of February, March, April, May, August, September, October, or November offer the best time to explore this charming city. The Solan temperature remains quite mild during this time. But of course do cater for abrupt weather changes in hills.
However, the main draw of Solan is its incredible snowfall during winters. The sight is welcomed with open arms by tourists from all over the world.
About Solan

But it is more famous as the Mushroom Capital of India due to its high production of mushrooms, particularly button mushrooms. The climate and conditions in Solan are conducive to mushroom cultivation.

Oh! rain in Himachal is something! Once, I felt as if I was driving in the river!
Hello, Indrani. I have been to India three times, but have not yet experienced such rain. I love your description of this storm.
Wow, what a deluge!
As long as you weren't having to drive on steep, narrow mountain curves, I think the downpour might have been most enjoyable. Great video.

Hail storms can be very dangerous. Luckily, you could just catch the ice and feel the rain with "sweet" joy. I like your attitude on life. What mother nature dishes out is okay with you.

Very enjoyable video of the storm, Indrani!
Great video of the downpour. I've seen hail bust windshield when it's very big so it frightens me.
Oh, that rain is soothing and magical!
Love rainy weather, even hail.
Cannot upload video right now, will check it out later.
We've been having lots of downpours this week, but fortunately no hail.
oh lovely!
woww…Lovely
Sometimes it's amazing how quickly the weather can turn! Even though I live in a northern climate, I am fascinated by hail – the fact that ice drops from the clouds then is carried up again many times before it gets so heavy it drops to the earth. Very nice capture of the storm.
Oh my..!! what a rain!! with ice cubes falling right down from sky!! =O One never stop to fascinate the nature! that's for sure!
garam chai.. I did not know that garam means hot, does it? then I understand.. because I once had some spices named garam masala. now I just have some tandoori masala, which I do love to use when cooking! :))
Feel like entering the video and enjoy the rain .
I wish I cud view this video!
Wow! That IS a downpour!! Thank you for sharing. It reminds me of the sudden rainfall in Indonesia. We, children, were always excited and ran outside the house to get soaking wet.
