Strasbourg Cathedral Door France: Intricate Sculptures
This marvelous facade of Strasbourg Cathedral was built between 1277 and 1365. Before you step in, the archway over the Strasbourg Cathedral door will stop you on your tracks.
Such a lot of characters on the door arch! It will be a huge exercise to write a book on the characters sculpted here, I wonder if anybody has attempted it! If there is one I want to read it for sure. The facade has a nice brick red tinge, a very different flavor from the ones I have seen till date. Here are some pictures from the central door and the grand sculpted figures around it.
Intricate Gothic carvings by Erwin von Steinbach over central door of Cathedral.
The statues of the prophets of the Old Testament are represented here in the 5 arches of the portal. These characters are believed to be the link between ancient and modern times and, as such, are guarantors of the accurate unfolding of history.
Rose Window of Strasbourg Cathedral Door
Magnificent Rose Window by Erwin von Steinbach. It constitutes the central point of the facade. This piece of work (15 meters in diameter) is unique of its kind. It shows ears of wheat, symbolic of the commercial power of Strasbourg in the Middle Ages.
A gallery of Apostles borders the rose window at the top. This is the point of honour of the rich statuary that characterises the facade.
During the Revolution, all the statues were ordered to be destroyed. More than 230 were destroyed. However thanks to the presence of mind of an administrator of public property. He managed to hide 67 of them!

So impressive. And I love that spot of blue.
What a lovely cathedral and arcitecture! =)
The carvings are awesome. Beautifully captured.
Thanks for reminding me of this amazing cathedral–I visited Strasbourg in 2002 as part of a watercolor workshop group. Needless to say we didn't attempt to copy this, but focused on the timber frame buildings. Did see it on walking tour, but my photos were not the quality of yours.
Nice, what intricate design!
Such a work of art. Too bad they don't make stuff like that anymore.
