Faces of India – 131 School Girl from Sundarbans
Faces of India
a series through which I intend to portray the various characters of my country whom I met during my travels. I bring back souvenirs, frozen moments from my travels, why not some memories of people I have met and interacted during the travels. Faces of India is a weekly series in my blog since MARCH 2011. See more here…
She is a school girl from Sundarbans, West Bengal, in her 10th grade. Notice that her school uniform is “sari”. I asked her if she didn’t feel uncomfortable in attending school wrapped in that 5 yards of cloth called sari (saree). She smiled and admitted that they did feel uncomfortable. I further asked her why doesn’t she tell the school authorities and ask for a change in uniform, to which she replied: my seniors never objected…
School Uniform – Saree
The city schools of west Bengal have skirt-shirt or salwaar-kameez as uniform for girls. But in remote areas and villages the girls have to wear sari as uniform. Till seventh or eighth grade girls wear skirt and shirts, but the day they step into 8th or 9th grade the uniform changes to sari.

Reflection of beautiful India.
I like your portraits, Indrani!
I wonder how beautifully you capture the people! Sari is, indeed, the costume that makes the wearer the most good looking, always!
And tahts the reason behind half our maladies .. "my seniors(elders) never objected…"
Pretty girl. How interesting that she doesn't feel the need to change the uniform.
Beautiful..:)
that's the real problem
We are inclined towards adjusting rather
Than voicing ..
cute candid shot Indrani.
Even In Assam,School Uniform in Sari is quite common,Even my Mom and my Cousins wore them back when in Schools
Even in calcutta, there r schools wheregirls need to wear a sari….in fact, its a proper uniform with a colour code
what a remarkable face!

Beautiful in our traditional attire! Saris are better suit for college girls rather school.

Lovely portrait of a beautiful girl.
She is a lovely girl.
She looks so graceful… Its sad why all the dress code restrictions are imposed on women only…wish one day she gets to wear the attire of her choice!
This is a beautiful portrait of a very pretty young lady.
So nice pics, Great capture.
Have a nice weekend , Happy Durga Puja.
She looks lovely!
Beautiful Capture.
Brilliant – weather beaten but innocent !
The girl has a typical Indian traditional face..She is adding more weight to ur Series..
I pity the poor girl for having to drape the sari each day…
Lovely lady with a very nice smile…..good photo.

Thank you so much for your comments Sylvia, TexWis Girl and Sandy! Your comments are always so inspiring, makes me want to continue this series. 🙂
Thank you Team G Square. I wonder though how should a student look like? 🙂 The boys wear full pants and not dhoti.
Nice picture. She does not look like a student. Does boys have to wear panche or dothi for uniform.
What a respectful young lady. She looks very beautiful. This post has me wondering how and when change comes about.
she is beautiful. perhaps you have given her an idea.
Such a lovely girl and beautiful capture as always, Indrani! And, as always, I look forward to this post — all of your posts, actually! They are wonderful and informative. Thank you!
