Stunning Rose Windows of Reims Cathedral France
The interior of Cathedral Notre-Dame de Reims is of enormous proportions. Statistics are: 138m in length, while the central nave rises over three levels to a height of 38m.
One thing I missed doing here was going up to the roof of the cathedral. The view I believe is grand! Interior of Reims Cathedral too is profusely carved with statues just as its exteriors. It has the prestigious tag of UNESCO World Heritage site since 1991.
Do have a look at this: Richly Carved Doors of Reims Cathedral in France.
And also the Facade of Reims Cathedral covered with a blanket of sculptures.
That day 15th April 2012, was a Sunday, prayers were on. I didn’t directly focus on the priest conducting the prayers. Thankfully tourists were permitted inside. Our movements were restricted to one side of the church and we were silent throughout.
Rose Windows in Interior of Reims Cathedral
It is interesting to note here that the stained windows of Reims Cathedral are themed on biblical stories. The stained glass windows look fabulous. Sun light streamed in through them and the whole place had a beautiful glow all around. Most of the old stained glass paintings were lost in the series of wars, most are new and few restored ones.
During 13th century when this cathedral was built not many knew to read and write. Books, Bibles were privilege for only the priest class. Only they could educate the locals by reading to them and through such pictorial depictions in stained glass windows.
Something similar was happening in India too, where holy books were read and understood by Brahmin class. The sculptures of Krishna Temple in Mabalipuram were probably a medium to educate the locals then.
The inner side of the western facade is unique in Gothic architecture with its rows of niches containing statue. Just standing near the door I managed to take some shots.
This south rose window is a modern replacement of the original ones. The first one of 13th century got blown off during a storm in 1580, the second replacement got destroyed completely during WWII. The one that you get to see is the installation in 1937.
Rose window in the north depicts the story of Adam and Eve. Follow the panels in clockwise direction, starting at 12’ o’ clock position, for the complete story. There is a slight mismatch in the panels and the story which is believed to have happened during restoration work. I am not aware of the actual reasons.
Interior of Reims Cathedral
A series of brass Gothic chandeliers, suspended from the height of the vaulted ceiling, light up the interior together with the windows of the central nave. After King Henry I of France was crowned here in 1027 and this cathedral permanently became the location of coronation of French monarchs.
Had I planned a different time to visit I could have explored the interiors of the cathedral well!
I love the architecture and light in these shots.
These are marvelous pictures of the interior, especially since your movement was restricted. The rose window is absolutely gorgeous.
