Rainy Day Adventure at Lake Balaton, Hungary

Do you look upon the rain as a work of Devil? The child in each of you is sure to scream a big NO.

Each of us, I am sure, as a child has enjoyed bathing in rains much to the protests from the concerned and worried mothers. Those days it was automatic, when rain poured we used to sneak out through the backdoor to get drenched.

Where have those giddy hilarious days gone! With adulthood and parental responsibilities who has the time to stand and stare! An unexpected downpour, the first thought would be to scurry home.

Rain almost paralyzed my wings of desire. Many times I planned, if it rains hard the next time I will take a long walk getting drenched, that rainy adventure never happened.

Rainy Day Adventure at Lake Balaton

But I did experience a rainy adventure in one of the most unexpected places, unplanned. It was when we were sailing in a boat in Lake Balaton, Hungary. Lake Balaton is the largest fresh water lake of Central Europe.

That day, the not so clear sky turned dramatic with heavy clouds threatening to pour anytime. As we set off in the boat the skies acted. What started as a drizzle turned to nonstop downpour. Of course we were not prepared with umbrellas.

Initially I was disappointed. There was no way of stopping the show of water, standing on the boat we were sandwiched between water and water! Drops trickled down mercilessly through the layers of cloth, shoes soaking wet, it was as if Mother Nature decided to bathe all of us.

Surprisingly none of us had any frown on our faces. It was hard to believe we were smiling to each other, extending our palms to get more of the drops. Soon I realized we were actually enjoying!

I realized we just need the awesome attitude to enjoy the unexpected. Being alive is awesome! This is one life and one journey! And this may be just one journey to Hungary, one boating experience of our lives in Lake Balaton, let us enjoy!

Many other adventurous sailors too had braved the rough weather that day. Our boats rocked; yes we had an awesome rocking experience!

Next time you are caught in unexpected showers, don’t panic, don’t tighten your muscles, just let go. Allow Mother Nature to embrace you with Her magical drops!

  • I could see how the strong winds sway the trees!

  • Rain is most appreciated during a drought! 😉 I like rain…except when I really want a sunny day to go out and take photos.

  • 🙂 this reminded me , I had gone with family and friends to Durham for site-seeing and we ended up in a boat .. going up the river and Suddenly It rained as if there will be no tomorrow ..

and I tell you it was one of the best experiences .. first there was this mad rush to find plastic bag so all mobiles fones etc can be saved and the camera can be saved .. and after that since we could nothing much.. we just sat and got drenched… and laughed our heads out .. because generally when we go out and about we wear our best clothes 🙂 and the ladies were also all decked up …
    he he he he

It was chaos.. and then we sat and opened the typical indian style .. the thermos's to have that Hot TEA 🙂 yummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

  • I envy your job, always travelling and experiencing whatever there is to life! Rain has always been a welcome thing for me, even if the rest of a group seem scurrying for cover, i actually welcome it with joy. It is my symbol of hope and cleansing. ..and i love that second photo with the leaf movements all facing one side!

  • Love rain. can't remember when last it did rain over here. Please have a good Tuesday.

  • What a great post for the day, Indrani!! We do have SO much rain here in the northwest US, but there are still times when I find the same delight of walking in the rain and being able to enjoy every moment! Hope your week is off to a great start! Enjoy!

  • Brilliant photos and the rest.

  • Thank you for reminding us of the childhood joy we all experienced during a rain. Your experience on the lake sounds like it was wonderful. I plan to walk slowly — not run — the next time I'm caught outside in an unexpected shower.

  • We are into the third week of very gloomy with barely any sun. I get depressed, but it comes with the territory that I live in.

    Beautiful photos!

  • Delicious photos. Yes, I love all three, different but very good. Greetings.

  • living in texas where we get too many long, hot, dry summers, i never take rain for granted. love the top shot.

  • Wonderful shots and a great descriptive narrative. I love rain most of the time although when I used to sail in a small boat we had, I didn't like getting stuck in scary storms.

  • It is good to let go of fear and allow the moment to wash over you.
