Olomouc to Prague: Scenic Road Trip through Battlefields
Drive by pictures; they were taken on the way to Prague from Olomouc, Czech Republic. We were traveling by car and crossed these scenes while going to Brno too.
The canon in the first picture looked strange, probably it was kept for some kind of advertisement I concluded then. This being a drive by shot, I was not aware of its exact location. My blogger friend from Poland, Lucja Maria has written in to say this was once a battle field.
The Battle of Austerlitz, also known as the Battle of the Three Emperors took place here in 1805. This was one of Napoleon’s greatest victories, where the French Empire effectively crushed the Third Coalition.
This second picture is my favorite from Olomouc to Prague Road Trip photo series. The green, yellow and blue makes it so pleasing to eye. These are Canola – rapeseed fields in full bloom at this time of the year. We were traveling there in May 2011, visiting the top attractions of Czech Republic. Spring had set in, the outrageously yellow fields of rapeseed flowers made for a lovely landscape against the blue of the sky.
Rapeseed is grown for the production of animal feed, vegetable oil for human consumption, and biodiesel.
At a distance we saw huge fire and a long column of smoke. The height at which fire was raging was strange. I guess it was human controlled one, never heard of any incident related to it later.
Defence Command Post at Olomouc
We saw some fighter aircrafts lined up. Looked like we crossed the command post of Olomouc.
The independence of the Czech Air Force was terminated on 1 December 2003. The force became a part of newly established Joint Forces of the Czech Army with the command post located at Olomouc.
Canola Fields of Olomouc
The bright yellow flowers made my day!
Zelec Solar Power Plant Olomouc
We crossed a huge field studded with solar panels. So much green energy!
There are about 1400 – 1700 hours of sunlight a year in the Czech Republic and it is being put to good use for solar power generation. Due to some favourable laws both commercial and private customers have shown increased interest in solar power generation in the Czech Republic.
There are about 20 companies in the Czech Republic who manufacture solar photovoltaic panels of which a large part is exported.
