Faces of India – 239 Vegetable Vendor in Bangalore
Faces of India,
Faces of India is a series through which I intend to portray the various characters of my country whom I met during my travels. I bring back souvenirs, frozen moments from my travels, why not some memories of people I have met and interacted during the travels. Faces of India is a weekly series in my blog since MARCH 2011. See more here…
A vegetable vendor; it may sound ordinary but take my word he isn’t. His shop is on a pavement hardly measuring 5 ft by 5 ft. The way he has stacked his vegetables in that tiny space amazed me.
When floor space was hard to acquire he has used vertical stacking to solve the space problem. Almost all his vegetables are stacked up neatly one above the other. Packets of delicate baby corns at the top and sturdy pumpkins at the bottom, and in between there were the colorful vegetables.
Can you guess how old this shop is? It is 35 years old. His father ran this business at the same spot for 20 years and he has been running this shop for past 15 years. He is making enough and more profit and has no intentions of budging from that place.
More than him it is the arrangement of vegetables that attracted me to the shop. A casual discussion about the shop inspired me to photograph him for my faces of India series. The picture was taken in a busy street of Bangalore.

Such a wise expression captured in his face. Love this series on your blog. 🙂
A hardworking face! Running a business for 35 years is no little feat!
It looks so beautiful! Kitni mehnat ki hogi na! Spending a lot of time in arranging a pattern, which he knows -or rather hopes – that will be destroyed. Because, unless it is disarranged, he won’t earn.
What a lovely pic!
wow now that’s really innovative way to stack vegetables.
That there is some fantastic stacking! I wonder how much work it takes to do this every day!
Very fresh and assorted vegetables!!! And a good history!!
I enjoy this series on your blog so much.
It was great to know about this vegetable seller. Wonderful capture 🙂
Sabziwala artist…amazing capture!
True enterprise!!
It is evident in the picture how he has arranged the veggies. Nice job. Of course, when a business appears neat and tidy customers are automatically attracted. Small or large, management always matters. Nice capture too. I see you have eyes for finding the gems.
An Expertise Unique by itself passed on from father to son.. The right Click of the times!

Great portrait! I love all the veggies behind him.
I saw so many vegetables and fruit stacked in such creative (and space-saving) ways when I was in India. I really like your Faces of India.
Carrying on the family business is a very honorable profession. Wonderful photo Indrani.
Wow! Amazing how long standing the shop was and too for that space of 5-5! Obviously his arrangement of vegetables was pretty neat and attracts to buy.
Thanks for sharing
Nice pick Indrani. The arrangement of veggies is no less than a work of art.
Nice post and pic
Hello Indrani, great shot of the street vendor. It must be a great shop with loyal customers. Have a happy weekend!
Well placed, all those veges, I do hope he sold a lot. But, if he does, it would kind of mess up the dispay.
Amazing story with picture
