Faces of India – 133 Turmeric Grinding Machine Owner
Can you guess how he makes his living? He is a turmeric crusher. He had machines for other grains too, but since turmeric stains other ingredients this one was specifically meant for turmeric. I met him in Ilambazar, West Bengal.
Faces of India,
Faces of India is a series through which I intend to portray the various characters of my country whom I met during my travels. I bring back souvenirs, frozen moments from my travels, why not some memories of people I have met and interacted during the travels. Faces of India is a weekly series in my blog since MARCH 2011. See more here…
Very hardworking peoples, I had seen a person with same profession but with a single hand and the most important was his smiling face.
So beautifully captured. 🙂
Just wonderful! I wonder how do you find them. You have a great eye for details.
He seems to be quite an honest and hardworking gentleman
Grew up with many such people around. Rapid urbanisation has killed so many such professions…
That’s an interesting shot. The man powders turmeric and the whole image has a yellowish/orange tinge. 🙂
A unique profession…. 🙂
Picture speaks for itself. So well captured. The turmeric all over his dress…
Such a hard working person. I really enjoy your Faces of India posts 🙂
A hard working Indian
Nice pic Indrani. This field of work usually gets unnoticed.
Your portraits speak for themselves!
Ya, I remember we used to go with container full of grains , and get it crushed a flour, during our childhood. This photo reminded me those days.
Simplicity, Honesty and Natural…. capturing India is an amazing concept.
Nice Shot, it is all different world when you start seeing through your camera.
So you got him near my hometown, nice capture, good to read about him.
Truly superb series of faces of India.
excellent pic.
Have a great week until New Year.
R.k.laxmans common man came to life
This photo is very candid u know
that's neat work. I'm on a turmeric kick so hat tip to his trade.
Amber everywhere !!
Fantastic !!
When I wrote my post – When it rains… I thought of you since in a way that talks about a commoner who was anonymous !
Each person is with a unique story! That fills my mind with different moods! Very interesting one 🙂
once again an epic pic (: Keep posting under this series (:
no wonder he is all yellow and orange.
I first thought those were paint splatters on his clothes. Your photograph brought out the colors on his clothes and in his face very well.
A tough profession as it takes a toll on the lungs and overall health as well. But with all ready made masalas being available slowly this tradition is dying away.
Really liked your thought behind the wonderful capture!
Another very fine portrait!
The common indian man….. who works hard to earn his living..dreams big…. what a beautiful capture..!!
reminded me of Swami Vivekananda portrait .. nice click !
Very Interesting capture dear…
No mask .So pure and innocent .jk
This series is phenomenal. Great job with the photo 🙂
A very good one!
I find this series "Faces Of India" very interesting… we get to see so much of the other side of India. I have never seen how turmeric is pounded in a machine. thanks you for sharing it 🙂
Turmeric certainly does stain, something I know from personal experience. (sigh) I like seeing how it's crushed in West Bengal.
This picture shows how hardworking & true Indians are towards their professions 🙂
Really nice, Indrani! 🙂
At first I thought he was working at a road-side eatery…then I read the answer and yes, his clothes have Turmeric powder…
Really nice picture!
Amazing!!
I have seen people working in Mills and they do work really hard..
Nice Capture..:D
Thanks Indrani for letting me roam and see India vicariously.
Super Post
Super!!!!
Waiting for next post in faces of India posts 🙂
I am trying to imagine the beautiful aroma that surrounds him all the time–and turmeric is antiseptic too 😀
Great shot!
aha.. i remember wen i was small i would accompany my mom to the flour mill. nw in city its a rare sight.thx for making those memories fresh…
Nice shot. I find your portraits of people very fascinating.
Wonderful portrait of a man & his living.
This is another wonderful portrait. It's easy to see why he needs a separate machine for turmeric.
a very messy job, apparently, but a wonderful portrait.
Great portrait. I didn't guess but once I saw what he did it made sense.
Hard working indeed…
The common man making his living amidst the spices. Well captured 🙂
Great capture of the Man and his Machine!
A nice job too.
Nice capture
Very nice photographed Indrani.
Greetings, Joop
Another wonderful image! I really enjoy your Faces of India posts.
Hard working…
I have seen them. I thought turmeric and chili are done the pounding way. Like to hear that rhythm when you approach one of these shops.
I do enjoy this series of yours so very much — as I'm sure you know by now! The faces say so much and without a word — something to remember as we see people in our own worlds — look beyond the surface!! That's what I've had confirmed for me. Thank you! Have a lovely weekend, Indrani!!
A wonderful portrait – he is dusted with his trade!
This man processes my tumeric! Thank YOU, sir
