Faces of India – 342, Conversations with Residents of Srirangam

If you have been to Srirangam you must have seen these little houses stacked one after another along the streets. The houses have no boundaries, just a wall separating them. Women often sit on the steps and catch up with each other. Read on to know my Conversations with Residents of Srirangam.

Faces of India

a series through which I intend to portray the various characters of my country whom I met during my travels. I bring back souvenirs, frozen moments from my travels, why not some memories of people I have met and interacted during the travels. Faces of India is a weekly series in my blog since MARCH 2011. Conversations with Residents of Srirangam

I just stopped to say hello. They were chatting and laughing to each other I saw from a distance.

It took some time to break the ice but then I soon found myself to be at the receiving end of her questions. The woman in bottle green colored sari did most of the talking. I found her to be more inquisitive of me than I was of her.

What do you do with all pictures you click?… she asked. I add them to what I write I told her. Then she went on how long will you be in Sri Rangam, did you like the temple, is this your first visitโ€ฆ and how many children you have, both daughters?…

Coming from a lady of her age I felt so good answering her simple questions. Then she asked me to sit between them on the steps. I longed to sit there and soak in the warmth of their conversationsโ€ฆ but I had to move on.

Happy New Year Greetings from India

  • Why do you click pics! and what will you do with the Pics are the 2 Universally asked Questions if you have a Camera in your Hand! My personal observation ๐Ÿ™‚ but love the the conversations with the locals but at times over-friendly too !

  • Good that you speak local language. ๐Ÿ™‚

I had my embarrassing moment when I was traveling solo in the interiors of Tamil Nadu. I had mugged up a few words such as ‘how much’, ‘where is’ etc.
I was in a village near Thanjavur.
Can’t tell you how I felt when I bought a coconut from a roadside vendor on a hot afternoon and asked in Tamil ‘how much’. The old lady was so happy to hear the local words from a ‘foreigner’ that she started talking to me in Tamil… for full half an hour !

At the end of the conversation I still didn’t know how much to pay ! ๐Ÿ˜€

  • Nice pic! The woman who talked to you seems quite friendly! ๐Ÿ™‚

  • So interesting to follow your journey. Great write up. You’ve been doing this a long time!
