Colorful Coxcomb, Cockscomb, Rooster Head, Celosia Flower
Have you seen flowers that look like colorful brains? Some say they look like convoluted brains and some even find it resembling rooster’s comb. Also known as wool flowers, they have many medicinal properties.
Cockscomb Flower blooms in a variety of colors like vibrant yellows, pinks, reds and gold colors. Strangely Cockscomb has no fragrance. When I was small I used to be dead scared of these flowers. I could never think of smelling them or feeling them. I always imagined them to be living things which would start crawling any moment. Now when I run my fingers and get the velvety feel I laugh at my silly childhood fears.
These pictures of colorful cockscomb flowers were taken at a flower show in Lal Bagh, Bangalore. Each flower was so huge, may be almost the size of human brain. Here is a macro shot of red coxcomb. The blooms remain fresh up to as long as ten weeks.
Scientific name is Celosia, it belongs to the edible amaranth family of plants. They collectively resemble fire, which is why their name Celosia. In Greek language it means means burning. Other names are: Brain Celosia, Red Fox, Cockscomb and Wool Flower.
Eyes catching colors! Liked the macro detail
When I was too young, I came across these flowers (they never looked like flowers at that time – spread like a fan) but they were too small. I loved the velvet feel. Here they look beautiful particularly the red coxcombs,
I have tried to grow these and they never look as good in my gardens as they do in your photos. 🙂
Glad you made friends with this flower. Nice shots.
Oh, I love these flowers! They are available at our farmer's market all summer and they last a long time.

Beautiful flower… first time seeing it
thanks
They're interesting flowers. I can see why you would fear them as a child… depending on what stories you'd have heard about them.
So beautiful!

So beautiful
I've been to these gardens (one December) and there were still a few left. December wasn't the best time to be there, but that's the best I could do!
I love these! My gramma had them in her garden.
