5 Attractive Tulip Flowers from Europe: a Photo Essay
One of my dreams that are going to remain unfulfilled is growing Tulips in my balcony garden. Bangalore is exposed to hot sun for most part of the year which kills these bulbous plants even as they rise and begin to show their heads.
The Tulip Garden in Kashmir is famed as the largest tulip garden in Asia. Luck hasn’t favored me yet to visit this beautiful place yet. Nevertheless during my tours of European countries I managed to click some pictures of tulips.
Here are 5 attractive tulip flowers from Austria and Italy.
Tulip Bright Parrots
A parrot tulip is a mutation of an ordinary tulip, a new form due to genetic change. You can identify them by their ruffled serrated petals. Parrot Tulips appeared for the first time in 17th century in France and almost a century later in Netherlands.
I spotted these in Modena Italy. The tulips looked so lovely with their over sized orange red petals adorned with yellow wavy edges fringed like feathers. Whimsically shaped, the flowers blooms resemble parrot’s plumage.
These shots were taken during my walking tour of Modena, Italy.
Single Early Tulips
Single Early Tulips are lovely cup shaped flowers with 6 petals. They are the first ones to bloom when winter is just disappearing. There are several colors of this variety. Some are flamed with a contrasting color like this one, red and yellow.
Tulip Christmas Marvel
This one has a perfect egg shape and bright cherry pink color. It has a sweet fragrance too. Because of their attractive color and shape gardeners often plant them at strategic positions or in containers so that they can be shifted around.
Pink tulips represent perfect happiness. These flowers are used for offering best wishes. Pink and red tulips have somewhat similar meaning. Pink tulips also express care and attachment.
Tulip Apeldoorn
This is a type of Darwin Tulip. Looks strikingly bright scarlet red blooms, and a pyramid shape. Swaying on tall erect stems they are very attractive. Tulip Apeldoorn blooms after Single Earlies before Cottage varieties. These tulips are sought more as cut flowers hence cultivated more for use by interior decorators.
Red tulips are given by lovers to express true love. The Legend connected to red tulips is love story of Shirin and Farhad. Farhad, a Turkish prince, was in love with a maiden named Shirin. Shirin’s death left Farhad in grief and in despair jumped off a cliff. From the drops of Farhad’s blood emerged the red tulips! Therefore, these tulips symbolize selfless love.
Broken Single Early Tulip
Final one in my list of 5 attractive tulip flowers from Europe. The colors in the petals of any tulip division has the potential to break, the pigment color separates revealing the base color and the petals get beautiful streaks.
The Broken Tulips are result of attack by Tulip Breaking Virus (TBV) which are spread by aphids. This variety of tulips banned from cultivation. Today un-diseased tulips are bred to resemble the Broken Tulips. Of the 5 attractive tulips here this variety is my favorite.
The variegated tulips speak about beautiful eyes.

Pixellicious Photos
It's a shame you can't grow tulips in your balcony garden, but you certainly captured some beautiful ones in Modena.
I wish my balcony garden could last all year long not just May to September and to have an orange or lemon tree in it!
A stunning macro with beautiful colors.
Lovely pictures, though the colour composition in the second one is really appealing.
Beautiful images of tulips. I like the different reds and the shades of yellow.
Lovely pictures. I guess they were not meant for this weather. Just as we would not find delicious mangoes in Italy or Amsterdam!
