Virupaksha Temple in Hampi getting Facelift

Virupaksha Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is the main temple in Hampi. It is an important temple because, since its inception in the 7th century AD the temple has been functioning uninterruptedly. That makes Virupaksha Temple one of the oldest functioning temples in India. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Pampa Devi.

The temple is in news now as it is getting a facelift.

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is giving a chemical wash to the outer stone wall of this ancient Temple. That the gopuram (temple tower) had lost its sheen was quite obvious for the past many years. When I visited in 2010, almost 5 years back, the stains of dust was very evident. Here and there on the facade there were black patches.

The chemical wash should restore its glorious look. And the whole process is estimated to take a couple of months. By December Virupaksha Temple will have a brand new look, why not plan a visit then?
