United Nations Stamps from UNPA Vienna
Vienna International Centre United Nations Office is a very impressive building from architecture point of view! We hurried in after an elaborate security check. But in spite of all hurrying we reached late and missed the tour they give tourists. Nevertheless for memory’s sake we purchased the United Nations stamps from the UNPA office.
Vienna is one of the 4 international UN headquarters (since 1979), along with New York, Geneva and Nairobi. The Vienna International Centre (VIC) is home to the UN in Vienna.
Vienna International Centre, one of the official residences of United Nations. The UN is open to visitors; there are guided tours, of course no photography is permitted. Lot of understandable security checks, and once through with the checks you get into a very international atmosphere.
Children should know the Role of UNOV
The Vienna International Centre United Nations Office staff works for peace, human rights and development. They aim to use atoms for peace. Main objective of UNOV is to reduce poverty through inclusive and sustainable industrial development.
One of their main agenda is to ban nuclear testing and bring the benefits of the peaceful uses of outer space to every part of the world. They are striving to remove legal obstacles to international trade, and also make the world safer from drugs, crime and terrorism.
Our Experience at UNOV
The staff there was totally helpless about arranging a visit. It is important to be punctual even on holidays, my kids learned that day! Only interesting activity we did here was of sending self addressed cards. We purchased stamps from United Nations Office, pasted on a couple of cards and posted from there to get postage seal on them.
There are 191 country member flags on display, and tourists mostly children were happily pointing out their own. This definitely is an interesting place to visit because this is where many important decisions concerning the betterment of our world are taken.
The Vienna International Centre (VIC) is a modern setting that has housed numerous international organizations since August 23, 1979. The VIC offers striking architecture and a vibrant, cosmopolitan atmosphere. Daily guided tours are available for visitors to explore and learn about the work of the United Nations. On the tour, you can
- Count the flags of the more than 190 Member States on the Memorial Plaza.
- Visit temporary exhibitions showcasing the work of the United Nations are regularly held at the VIC.
- See impressive conference rooms during the tour.
- Experience vibrant, cosmopolitan atmosphere of the VIC.
- See the Vienna International Centre’s striking architecture
- Learn about the work of the United Nations, gain an insight into the work of the United Nations in Vienna
- After the tour, visitors can visit the Visitors’ Centre at Gate 1 for additional information on UN activities and to purchase United Nations souvenirs. We did this last one… purchased UN postage stamps as souvenirs.
Very Important for Guided Tour at UNVO
Take valid identification document with your photograph on it.
United Nations Stamps
Did you know only the United Nations is permitted to issue postage stamps, even though it is an organization and not a country or a territory?
An agreement was reached with the United States postal authorities in 1951, Swiss authorities in 1968 and with the Austrian authorities in 1979 whereby the United Nations was permitted to issue stamps. Thus United Nations Postal Administration UNPA issues stamps in three different currencies: U.S. dollars, Swiss francs and euros. The stamps may be used for postage when used on mail sent from the United Nations offices in New York, Geneva or Vienna.
The stamps illustrate the aims and achievements of the United Nations. Thus, the themes depicted on United Nations stamps are unusual in that they cover a range of global issues and problems. Remember – These UN Stamps are valid for postage when used on mail from the UN offices in New York, Geneva and Vienna.
I couldn’t let go off the opportunity and purchased the UN Stamps. These postage stamps are themed on One Planet One Ocean.

I must admit that I didn't recognize the building, but it certainly is a magnificent building. If the tour in Vienna is anything like the one in New York, it was definitely fascinating.
A subtle and beautiful building. Thanks!
I am posting my cousin's photos of his tour to Europe. Wish I went like you.

It is a vast building, do they use it all, or do they just have opened it when the visitors arrive?
