Enchanting Tuscan Poppy Flower Fields in Italy

The sight of Tuscan red poppies greets you as you drive through the winding roads of Tuscany, Italy. It was late April when we drove through this scenic region. There were patches of bright red bursts here and there; the fields were yet to go fully ablaze. We were on our way to Pienza when we decided to halt for some scenic captures around.

Tuscany experiences rains in April and October. After the showers poppies prop up in every bit of land around – roadsides, fields, even in the famous vineyards and olive gardens! Last week of April and early May is the right time when you can feast your eyes with sights of blooming poppies.

All possibilities of getting your dream shot if you are there in mid May… lie down and take the shot of red poppy against the bright blue sky. There are several tour organizers who arrange photo tours to Tuscan Poppy Flower Fields.

I had company of the busy bees there which discouraged me, rather distracted me. They too were trying to extract the best possible from these wild poppies.

Year after year these poppy plants sprout, as if from nothing and with out any care and human intervention they flower. These blood red Tuscan poppy flowers are also called as corn poppy because it thrives well on land tilled for grain cultivation.

Normally weeds get rooted out from such lands used for cultivation, but not the red poppy flower plants. The seeds are known to be dormant for 40 years sometimes before they germinate. That is the strength of nature!

It is easy to grow in home gardens as they are self-sufficient when planted in full sun and well-drained soil. Red blood poppy flowers are gorgeous, have papery petals, sit atop 3ft stalks and self seed.
