Gryphons on Chandelier in Agia Sophia Church Thessaloniki

The most impressive thing I saw inside Agia Sophia Church in Thessaloniki is the big, bright and beautiful chandelier. It had so many Gryphons on Chandelier, each having a lamp holder on the head.

Gryphon is a legendary creature with the body, tail, and back legs of a lion; the head and wings of an eagle; and an eagle’s talons as its front feet. I was so fascinated by it that took so many pics of it. I think it is made of silver or may be brass. The chandelier was dazzling in the low light around it. I searched the internet for more info on this, the make or history, but couldn’t find anything relevant. The glowing is etched in my mind very clearly.

The church has huge interiors but very dark. In the darkness the chandelier was shimmering away. Flash photography is prohibited inside Agia Sophia church of Thessaloniki. I managed some captures of the chandelier. Have you seen a gryphon before?

Mythical creatures have always fascinated and terrified humans with their unnatural physiology and deadly power. Many  towns, cities, religious institutions have preserved their memories with statues and paintings. In Basel, Switzerland I saw Basilisk and in Budapest, Hungary I saw the Turul Bird.
