Why is the Sea Blue in Color? Science has the Answer

Why is the sea blue in color? Is the blue of sea below the reflection of blue of sky above? The vast Ligurian Sea had such a soothing blue personality! Seeing this sight I obviously got the impression the deep sea water is reflecting the sky above.

Science has a different answer though. The water surface of sea would have functioned as a plain mirror reflecting the blue sky had its surface been smooth. But that is not the case we know. The surface is wavy and full of ripples.

The deep blue color is because the quantity of blue light radiated is more; other wavelengths of lights are all absorbed more and more because of increasing depths. Water absorbs colors in the red part of the light spectrum. Like a filter, this leaves behind colors in the blue part of the light spectrum for us to see.

Different water bodies may also take on green, red, or other hues as light bounces off of floating sediments and particles in the water.

Depth and the water bodies, like that of ocean and sea, also influence whether the surface appears a dark blue or light blue.

The truth is that pure water is very slightly blue. It is just so pale that in small quantities it appears clear. Water is blue because it absorbs red, yellow and green light, but scatters blue light.

I learned this with my 13 year old and I saw new beauty in this picture. It was taken in Portovenere, Italy.

Did you know the Pacific Ocean contains some of the most deep blue colored waters in the world?

Do you know which sea has two colors?

Sail from Arabian Sea to Persian Gulf and you will see an amazing sight of seawater with two different colors. The color changes at a certain boundary, giving a sense of two different water bodies which decided not to blend together.
