Temples within Devanahalli Fort

Devenahalli is one of the living forts of Karnataka, India.  The small town inside the strong walls of Devanahalli fort is dotted with many ancient temples. Four temples worth visiting within this complex are: Venugopalaswamy Temple, Siddalingeshwara Temple, Chandramouleshwara Temple and Nanjundeshwara Temple.

Venugopalaswamy (Lord Krishna)Temple is one of the oldest here. Sculpture in this temple is said to be comparable to the temples of Belur and Halebid. It is a Dravidian style temple constructed during   the Vijayanagara Empire era.

Courtyard inside is spacious; the walls of the temple depict various scenes from Ramayana, and the pillars have beautiful statues carved on them. There is small parking space just outside the temple.

Ii is slightly disheartening to find that the temples in Devanahalli fort town are not maintained well at all. With the international airport nearby, I wish the Government would set aside some fund for the maintenance of these temples.

New Temples of Devanahalli Town

There are several smaller temples within Devanahalli fort complex dedicated to  many other Gods and Goddesses. In addition to existing ones many other new temples coming up in Devanahalli town. In a few months after all the paintings of these temples are completed, it is going to be more colorful. List of temples inside fort town of Devanahalli are:

  • Nanjundeswara Temple
  • Chamundeswara Temple
  • Veerabhadrasway Temple
  • Raganathaswamy Temple

Conclusion

There are several eateries along the highway just outside the Devanahalli Fort gates. Time required for touring the temple town is less than an hour. Since this is a living fort tourists are requested not to intrude into the privacy of locals.

If you are visiting for offering prayers at the temples, evenings would be ideal. Almost all temples are open then. (This post was first published on May 23rd 2008.)

  • As usual, you’ve covered the
    Devanahalli temples scenario, so
    well…. with lens and write-up.

Kings then took care of temples
    and its maintenance…. Sigh..
tho’ we have a dept. in Govt. for
this, much needs to be done.

Some benevolent soul need to take
the lead, to raise funds and take
    care of the temples.

  • these are great, thanks for your visit

On this Memorial Day remember my friends who died for your freedom.

Dear Lord, lest I continue in my complacent ways, help me to remember that someone died for me today. And if there be war, help me to remember to ask and to answer “am I worth dying for?”~

  • Thanks Vlahos… I am glad you found it interesting.

Thanks Lakshmi and Raji… I guess the new temple tops are of concrete and no longer carved out of stones, that is why they are colored.

Thanks Kelly… Welcome to my blog.

Thanks Elaine… I am touched by your concern and appreciation.

  • I agree that these temples should be maintained to be in tip top condition all the time 🙂 They’re beautiful architecturals with rich culture.

  • I enjoyed these very much! Thank you for sending me the link!

  • I am with backpakker there – I prefer the natural stone colouring, especially on the towers.
