Sunset at Tanjung Aru Beach Sabah, Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia

At Tanjung Aru beach of Kota Kinabalu I saw one of the most stunning sunsets of my life. The sky took on a golden yellow complexion, but soon changed to bright orange.

Later it sobered down to pink till darkness conquered it completely. After a long adventurous day in Sapi Island, hitting Tanjung Aru beach was the best thing to do in Kota Kinabalu.

Islands form Smiley Face

Tanjung Aru beach is one of the top 10 sunset view points of Kota Kinabalu. At a distance in the South China Sea you can see the Sulug and Manukan Island.

It is said that when you glance out of planes flying over South China Sea, you can see the Manukan, Mamutik and Sulug islands forming a cheerful smiley face.

These islands belong to a list of 12 islands forming amazing contours. See the list here.

Sunset in Tanjung Aru Beach Sabah

Sunset time at Tanjung Aru beach bubbles with active evening life. Several hawkers set up stalls selling ready to eat fruits, peanuts, dried fish, popular Malaysian dishes and seafood snacks.

During weekends it is very crowded. Entire 2km stretch of this white sandy beach seems the perfect place for get-togethers of friends and families.

The beach gets its name from swaying Aru (casuarina) trees that border the beachfront area.
