Fish Pedicure in Kota Kinabalu

Tagal Sungai Moroli

You get a good fish massaging experience here in the spa at Moroli River in the village. It is the only one of its kind in the whole of Sabah, Malaysia.

“Tagal” means no fishing and the main purpose is environmental and marine conservation. They claim the fish pedicure is deemed to have a curative effect on those who suffer from psoriasis.

The whole idea of fish nibbling away at your skin may be a little scary, so initially you can try just feet massage. Submerge your feet up to knee in the river and watch the fish doing their acts.

They eat only the dead areas of the skin leaving healthy skin to grow. It is strange sensation. The fish size range from 20cm to 30cm much bigger than the ones you see in indoor fish spas and there are many of them in the river.

Since it is in the open, in natural surroundings, I guess it is more hygienic than the ones in indoor spas (though I am no medical expert in this).

If you are courageous enough you can submerge your whole body under water. A little ticklish in the beginning and as you get used to them you begin to enjoy. I had my fish spa experience here: FLIPKART Outdoors, Bloggers’ Day Out

Caution: If your skin is of tender delicate type, then chances are you will get bruised.

Address: Kampung Luanti, Ranau, 131km from Kota Kinabalu (2 hours and 40 minutes drive away)

Here is all you want to know about Fish Spa therapy

Fish feet therapy, also known as fish pedicure or fish spa therapy, is a beauty treatment in which clients immerse their feet in a tank filled with small fish, typically a species known as Garra rufa or “doctor fish.” These fish nibble away at dead skin cells, creating a exfoliating effect on the feet. The practice gained popularity in certain regions as a way to promote skin health and softness, as well as relaxation.

The fish used in this therapy are toothless and are believed to naturally feed on dead skin, leaving the healthy skin untouched. Always be aware of the hygiene and safety of fish spa treatments, as the tanks can potentially harbor bacteria and pathogens. As a result, some jurisdictions have banned or restricted fish spa treatments due to health and sanitation concerns.

  • they tried it here in the US but many places were shut down due to threat of spreading disease since the fish eat on many person's feet.

  • The indoor spa ones are definitely unhygienic and they look yuck…but, I don't mind getting it done in open surroundings one day!

  • Interesting. Never experiences this.

  • Interesting! These days there are these fish massage outlets in various malls. Don't know if they are using the Doctor Fish!
