Sungai Moroli Fish Massage, Malaysia

What about a spa in natural settings? Does it entice you?

Malaysia has done well by converting many natural scenic spots into exotic tourist destinations. Kampung Luanti in Ranau has one such natural spa with Doctor Fish, very different from the average ones. Tagal Sungai Moroli: You get a good fish massaging experience here in the spa at Moroli River in the village. It is the only one of its kind in the whole of Sabah. “Tagal” means no fishing and the main purpose is environmental and marine conservation. They claim the fish massage is deemed to have a curative effect on those who suffer from psoriasis.

The whole idea of fish nibbling away at your skin may be a little scary, so initially you can try just feet massage. Submerge your feet up to knee in the river and watch the fish doing their acts. They eat only the dead areas of the skin leaving healthy skin to grow. It is strange sensation.

The fish size range from twenty to thirty centimeters much bigger than the ones you see in indoor spas and there are many of them in the river. Since it is in the open, in natural surroundings, I guess it is more hygienic than the ones in indoor spas (though I am no medical expert in this). If you are courageous enough you can submerge your whole body under water. A little ticklish in the beginning and as you get used to them you begin to enjoy. If your skin is of tender delicate type, then chances are you will get bruised.

  • Interesting! These days there are these fish massage outlets in various malls. Don't know if they are using the Doctor Fish!

  • Interesting. Never experiences this.

  • The indoor spa ones are definitely unhygienic and they look yuck…but, I don't mind getting it done in open surroundings one day!

  • they tried it here in the US but many places were shut down due to threat of spreading disease since the fish eat on many person's feet.

  • I love it…I would definitely try this!! Much easier on one's feet I am sure than the nail techs' cutting tools!! Ha
