Explore Interior of St. Matthias Church in Budapest

It amazes me how art historians depict the themes of their times. The era is clearly reflected through their works. At St Matthias in Budapest too I was mesmerized by the way they decorated the ceilings, walls, windows and altar of the church.

The first church on this spot dates to the 11th century but what we get to see today is from a 14th century late Gothic building. During late 1800s a big tower added to the structure transformed the interior into the marvel that it is today.

Interior of St Matthias Church in Budapest is unique. It is very colorful; this colorful character of the church is due to the beautiful cultural interchange of East and West. The various geometric and floral ornaments are a reminder of the Mosque that existed here before. Read the story here: St Matthias Church Exterior. The unique interiors were created at the end of nineteenth century, by Bertalan Szekely a leading painter of his times.

St Matthias Church Budapest Architectural Details

Interior of this holy Catholics church of Budapest is dotted with several chapels, paintings, and interesting architectural details. As you walk through and explore the interior watch out for:

  • The Pulpit that was designed by Frigyes Schulek (1841-1919). He is known for restoring the church. Budapest, Hungary.
  • The main altar and several chapels.
  • Tombs of King Béla III and his wife, which was moved to the chapel in 1896. Frigyes Schulek designed the tomb and Ferenc Mikula created the sculpture. The twelve apostles are lined up in a row above the tomb.
  • Church’s stained-glass windows
  • The three statues in the Saint Emeric Chapel depict the King St. Stephen, St. Emeric of Hungary (who holds a lily), and Gerard Bishop of Csanárd.
  • Mihály Zichy painted the scenes from the life of St. Emeric.
  • Winged altarpiece that has God the father holding the crucified Christ. All five panels embody an eclectic mixture of revival styles: the four panels on the wings of the altarpiece use the plateau compositions of Northern Renaissance paintings like Van Eyck and Memling, and center panel seems to combine Byzantine subject with later style.
