Door of Hope in Salzburg Cathedral, Ornate and Symbolic

Door of Hope is one of the three doors at the main entrance of Salzburg Cathedral, the city’s most sacred building. Other 2 doors symbolizes faith and charity. I would have passed this door seeing it shut but the details seemed interesting, as if telling a story.Glad I paused to take some pictures. Reaching home I googled to find more and turned out that it does represent a story.

The carvings and inscriptions on the door depicts Annunciation. It is the Catholic celebration of the announcement by Gabriel the angel to Mary that she would conceive the Son of God, Jesus. Door of Hope is the creation of Ewald Mataré in 1956 -1958.

The hand at the top right corner of the door symbolizes God. A Sun in the palm represents the Holy Spirit sent by Father in heaven to protect Mary. The figures around represent angels, emphasizing the holy aura of nature of the source of Gabriel’s message.
