Road Trip Sintra to Tomar, Portugal

4 UNESCO World Heritage sites in a day! Weather, roads, traffic, everything seemed to favor us that day! This road trip was made on 24th May 2015. The night stay was planned at Tomar and the journey to Tomar from Sintra was planned in such a manner that we could halt at 2 world heritage sites on the way; Alcobaca and Batalha. The road trip Sintra to Tomar, total of 200kms with 2 halts in between wasn’t tiring at all.

By the time we left Sintra, after the tour of Pena Palace it was nearing 12 noon. After an hours drive (for 128km) and lunch we spent another hour touring the second UNESCO World Heritage site, the Monastery of Alcobaca. The monastery, a monochrome building and sights inside; this contrasted the colorful palace we saw that morning.

Batalha Monastery

Alcobaca to Batalha is hardly a distance of 22.8kms. It took us hardly half an hour to get there. Portugal roads are so good, the drive was pleasant and the scenes so simple and beautiful! By 3 after noon we were at Batalha. Monastery of Batalha is the most important gothic site of Portugal. It was added to the prestigious list in 1983.

We toured leisurely here, though Tomar was just 45kms away we guessed the monastery at Tomar would be shutting down for the day, so no chance of touring it. I am glad we made the decision. We loitered around some of the souvenir shops of Batalha and soaked in the atmosphere there. It was past 5 when we reached Tomar.
