Pink Water Lily and Lotus Blooms of Thailand

These lily flowers were blooming in a stone bowl in a resort garden in Thailand. I found the pink variety quite common in parts of Thailand. My efforts to grow one have failed several times, after a lot of struggle one plant finally managed to bloom. You can see here: Pink Water Lily in my Balcony Garden

Do you believe that flowers bring back memories? When I see Lotus Flowers I am reminded of my visit to Thailand.

Lotus blooms in Thailand

Lotus flowers dominate the landscape in Thailand. I saw these delicate beauties growing vigorously in ponds and swamps, even in the road side ditches. I was reminded then that back at home in Bangalore I struggle to grow these lotus plants in my little terracotta pool.

Today while working on my lotus pools I was reminded of how the lotus blooms in Thailand were flourishing in neglected pools in roadside.

Many times I felt like wading through the slush and plucking them. They have this amazing ability to thrive in all water bodies, be it muddy slushy water or crystal clear water.

All stages of the flower are alluring and the sight so soothing, I came away framing them. The seeds are known to be dormant for as long as 200 years. This is one of the reasons why lotus is a symbol of immortality and resurrection.

In Hinduism and Buddhism many deities are pictured sitting on a lotus or holding a lotus flower, the symbol of enlightenment. Goddess Lakshmi, believed to be goddess of wealth, is seen seated on lotus. During the transition hours from ashtami to navami of Durga Puja, Goddess Durga is worshiped with 108 lotus flowers.
